Cruise probably shouldn't be waiting for Spieburg to call

September 21, 2005 -- TOM Cruise shouldn't wait by the phone for his old "friend" Steven Spielberg, who directed him in "War of the Worlds," to call.

Reports from Budapest and Paris, where Spielberg is filming "Munich," say the director is still steamed at Cruise for ranting, during what were supposed to be promotional appearances for the Martian-invasion film, against the widespread use of Ritalin to treat unruly children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder.

One source said: "Steven and his wife have five children themselves and know some children for whom Ritalin does a lot of good. They took exception to what Tom said about the drug."

Spielberg was also said to be annoyed that Cruise played up Scientology more than the movie during press interviews.

Another source, a close friend of the director, said: "They will not be working together again and Steven will never call him his friend."

1. I'm not much of a mainstream movie fan...

....but I have seen Tom Cruise in a few flicks.

I will never understand how he became such a mega-star. He is okay, but not even close to some of the best.

As for his yappin' about his beliefs, I don't understand the backlash on the guy. He is allowed to say whatever he wants to say and if people are going to worship him and follow his advice then that's their bag. If anyone out there actually listened to some two bit actor and took their kids off their meds because of it, then they should have their children taken away for being complete idiots. Truth is, you can be a complete idiot in this world and have as many children as you want.

2. I'd be pissed too--Tom went plumb nuts. At least the movie still did well.

Steven Spielberg probably doesn't *hate* Tom, and may work with him again. They did it twice, they seemed to like each other professionally before.

But, Tom Cruise did go crazy during this last press season. Talking about Scientology and vitamins and Katie...I'd be kind of embarrassed to then give an interview about the film when I'd only be asked about Crazy Tom and his shenanigans.

Cruise and Spielberg have made untold billions together and WoW did very well.

I think this is more fallout from people who did not like Tom Cruise's opinions. I for one agree with most of what he had to say.

4. I'd be more steamed at him for fucking up my movie

Tom Cruise excels in one role: bad boy who straightens out because of some cataclysmic event in his life, and saves the day after he gets his shit together.

He did it in Top Gun.

He did it in A Few Good Men.

He probably did it in Cocktail, although I had better things to do that night than go to it. (And you shoulda seen how pretty my sock drawer was when I finished it!)

He did the exact same shit in War of the Worlds, and that wasn't a movie that called for it.
