29. My husband and I call it that all the time now;
It will always be Chickadees from now on. I called Pier One Imports "Porty Ports" when I was about his age, and my mom still calls it that sometimes.

7. well, chik-fil-a was founded by a fundy.
But he's not really insane. In fact, he does a lot of good things for the community.

I'll admit the bring your church bulletin in for a free drink offers do kind of freak me out a little.

9. This is what the guy said in the Orange County Register:
They did an interview with the guy who owns something like 5 CFAs and he said "I dont own them. I manage them for God."

Yeah, I'm sure God would eat the crap they serve at Chik-Fil-A.

20. You can't own five CFA's
Edited on Wed Sep-21-05 01:05 PM by southlandshari
They don't franchise like any other fast-food place. Owner-operators pay $5,000 up front and take a salary plus part of the profits. FWIW. I don't know if it really adds much to the conversation here, but a bit of trivia I happened to know.

And if any CFA operator or manager is using religion in a discriminatory way, a call to CFA HQ in Atlanta will stop it right quick. They are very clear about taking care of all employees and customers, regardless of religion. I know this for certain. And they are very involved in philanthropy nationally and in local communities.

Jeez - I sound like the CFA police! Sorry. Spouse (non-Christian immigrant) has worked for them for years, and they (local operators and national office) have been incredibly good to us over the years.

There may be some overly zealous fundies in some locations, but that isn't the corporate culture. Yes, the man who founded it is a devoted and outspoken Christian. But I wouldn't call him or the company in general right-wing or fundie in the negative sense of the word.

22. Thanks for the info, Shari. The founder is a religious man, but I've
never had reason to dislike Chik-fil-a because of it and I'm pretty sensitive to overt and covert relgious undertones because I live in Atlanta and religion seems to be everywhere.

34. LOL - I'm sorry, it really may have been five!
I read my post again, and I really did sound like some Chick-Fil-A spy who trolls message boards in order to correct misinformation about the company! Yikes!

Actually, the reduction in the number of stores one can "own" is fairly recent, so there are many long-time operators out there who do run as many as five stores, I'll bet.

Sorry for sounding like the fast foot hall monitor! I just really have been impressed over the years at how open-minded my family (a very non-traditional family in the Deep South) has found CFA folks to be, at all levels of the company.

:hi:

That is awful about your son, though. I'll bet he HATES chik-fil-a now!

For some reason SUV-moms in my area seem to think chik-fil-a is somehow a good kind of fast food! But, I guess if you can convince yourself a truck with a hood on the back and high rollover potential is a "safer" vehicle, you can pretty much convince yourself of anything!

I remember when I requested a pickle on a burker king chicken sandwich once, and the employee actually made fun of me for it. The pickle makes the sandwich. Damn it, now I'm hungry and I want to run out and get an Original with the waffle fries and coke...

Although they had where I lived in Maryland.

I know they're fundie and all, but I actually kind of like them. :hide: Their chicken biscuits are heaven. It irks me when I get a craving on Sundays because they aren't open.

They believe what they say.

If there'd been a store open on all the Sundays my husband has craved them, all the franchise owners could be retired by now!

38. Yeah, I do give them credit for that.
They could be making tons more money, but they still won't do it on principle. It gives their employees a guaranteed Sunday off, too, which is cool. This atheist and her family go to Chick Fil A even after we've sworn off most other fast food.

39. I don't really eat any other kind of fast food, either.
In fact, even there, I usually get some kind of grilled chicken.

I think they do some meaningful training w/their entry level employees - they have scholarships and stuff for the ones in school. They definately don't treat them like they're going to be flipping chicken burgers forever!
