What was the longest you ever kept a secret?
And how big was that secret?

Mine was 7 years. And it was a very big secret. I found out when I was 11 that I was adopted. And I found out in a way that I shouldn't have heard. So I kept that knowledge to myself until I was 18. A big secret to carry around for so young a person. I think it affected a lot of things I did as a teen--sometimes in good ways, sometimes in bad ways. But I still kept it to myself.

4. Since 1972. My mother never knew, until the day she died.
Mrs R. knows, though. Some of it, at least.

And I kept a secret from her for 15 years as well. But now she knows. And it turned out that she knew without me even telling her, so what was the point of trying to hide it for so long?

You can't hold on to that stuff forever. It'll eat you up.

12. That's true about not holding the big secrets in. Bad for you.
Everyone should tell someone. Even if it's anonymous, like through a confessional or something.

8. Oh, I've kept secrets for thirty years and more
First, I had a top secret clearance while serving in the Army Signal Corps -- covering all kinds of classified stuff, most of which I've long since forgotten.
But also secrets one friend or another has told me over the years, usually while I had on my sympathetic face and made cooing noises. Truth is, I wasn't really listening -- but they always seem to feel better for blurting all that stuff out.
John
Plus, of course, I've done enough drugs that my long-term memory is completely shot.

Most of what I dealt with had to do with Army training and doctrinal matters. Fort Monroe, VA is home to TRADOC Command and the vast majority of the stuff I saw was mundane as all hell.
There were some juicy bits about officers getting caught in the sack with persons not their spouses and some gruesome items concerning training accidents and/or faulty equipment malfunctioning -- but no spy or alien stuff.
I'm amazed at how much of it I've forgotten. I served from 1974 to '76 and my military time seems like a hazy dream now. Which is probably just as well.
John
But my guess is, sure there're aliens -- why the hell not?

Some stuff is better kept secret. Please people get cranky when you don't keep theirs.

11. Four years. It was financial. Big secret. Well kept, rightfully so.
I finally decided to shed it via the infamous postsecret.blogspot.com, a site I actually like.

20. Forever
I once found out a secret about somebody I really hated. A pretty bad secret, something they did. But I never told a soul. I'm no saint but when it comes to secrets I'm bound by an unusual kind of honor. It just seems fundamentally unfair to use them against people.
