I hate it when my neighbors cats take a shit in my new grass that's just coming up. They've hit in about four different places. How do I keep them out with out killing them?

11. I have a scatmat scarecrow

They work great. I use it for raccoons, though.

The cats learned to avoid it fast. They even know what time of day I put it on. During the day they traipse across the deck without thinking. Comes 5:00 or so, they take the long way around. The raccoons keep coming back for more--just can't resist my little ponds. But it does keep them from eating the fish and uprooting the plants.

oh excuse morning (3:12am), two little furry monsters must have run into each other under my window. They were talking shit to each other for over an half hour. You know how one goes "Meoweowowowowwwoow" then the other "Yeowwowowowowbeowich" same sounds every damn time. Trying to make there way from each other by very tinyittybitty steps. My Sweet Sara (pooch) after about five minutes of these woke from her deep slumber and got pissed ran out side and try to out barkarfingyodel them. Didn't even make a dent in them leaving and she came back inside and went to sleep. Good, cough, girl.

Right after I get my mail in the morning, I get my pooperscooper and pick up the dog poop left by people walking their dogs the day before. I realize I'm not going to change dogs or their owners; going "to war" with them would be so self-defeating; I'd end up constantly angry, frustrated and looking like a real jerk.
There are some basic realities in life; one of these realities is that poop exists. You can't change that fact, no matter how many "wars" you initiate You either pick up the poop or you have a poopy lawn. You don't waste your time and energy fighting a hopeless cause. Don't let poop rule your life.

My next door neigbhor lets their dogs run loose and they shit in my yard. It pisses me off, but I reserver that anger for the people who deserve it, not the dogs who don't know any better. And I wouldn't even consider harming either the dogs OR their owners. People who think they're justified by doing either are violent criminals. Period.

Being a "victim" of a non-violent action doesn't excuse a violent response. You aren't defending your person. You are reacting to a nuisance with a violent response. You are committing a violent act. If we all reacted with violence to every perceived slight, society as we know it would cease to function. Thankfully, not everyone thinks that way. I would no more shoot my neighbors dogs then I would shoot the neighborhood kids for leaving their toys in my yard, or the neighbors who shout at each other late into the night keeping me awake, or shoot at their car for blocking my driveway. Shooting someone's pet because they're a nuisance is a violent, uncivilized reaction, and I judge those who would do such a thing thusly.

I leave my cat indoors, not just because I believe it's responsible, but because I know there are uncivil people out there who would violently take care of the problem. You may not react violently to all irresponsible neighborly behavior, but if you shoot cats in your yard, you are in that instance, particularly when there are many non-violent alternatives. You aren't kidding anyone when you say you are merely defending yourself from your neighbor or their actions.

And I'm in no way defending your crappy neighbors. Just know that posting in the DU lounge, the most cat crazy part of the internet that isn't dedicated solely to cats, is going to get you flamed, and really you can't blame them, because generally speaking, shooting at cats is a violent overreaction, and most who would react that way are only doing it because they want to shoot at things and they find this a convenient excuse. Knowing a bit more about you I wouldn't make that judgment, but generally speaking, that's how I see things.

She had one gentleman in town who would walk his dog every evening past her house and wait while his dog took a crap then just walk off. (She lives on a corner lot so it sees a lot of action). Finally she got so fed up that one night after they went by, she went out, bagged the mess and went to his house. She rang the doorbell and when he answered she just handed him the baggie and said "I think you forgot this on my lawn." Hasn't happened since.
