Filly Going to Devon

Hey horse lovers, I wanted to share two photos of my little 5 month old Dutch Warmblood filly. She is being shown at the prestigious Dressage at Devon show in a few days, and we had to shoot some photos of her today. Here she is braided for the first time, in her show halter. She's a beauty, but then her daddy may be a bit biased.

Weird, I spent about an hour the other day reading about Ruffian, and wondering about filly's in general. Are they as athletic as colts, do they exceed, etc? From your post it would seem so. I need to do some more research.

4. I don't like the head shot that much...

... it's kind of a goofy angle, but the profile is nice. She's put together well... nice length and angle of pasterns, great shoulder, a rather long neck that looks good with that exquisite head and ears. Her back is short, which is what I was breeding for, as I plan to use her as a jumper... I am not sure how the Dutch are going to score her, as they tend to look at the warmbloods as dressage horses, and like a longer back... I never got that, because their assessment of their breed tends to favor that long back and a certain movement, but seem to ignore the actual practical considerations of conformation that would have the horse hold up in sport applications. So the short of it is you tend to get a lot of sore-backed dressage horses after a while. I went to a Keuring last week, and they didn't even look at these horses from the front, so they tend to miss conformation issues with the forelegs, ie. toeing in or out, etc.

5. Her nice pasterns jumped right out at me when I saw...

her conformation shot. You did a nice job breeding. I am an idiot when it comes to dressage and jumpers but, her back looks pretty nice to me. I hope she gives you many great years and good times.

6. She has a great back and ass...

... for a jumper. She's going to be a hell of a good one, hopefully. Her half-brother is a horse called "Judgement," who just won the first million dollar jumper grand prix a few weeks ago. Ugly horse, but amazing talent.

My TB mare has a very long back, and she was a bit of a pain in the ass to jump around, as it was kind of like trying to drive a limo in the city. She also tended to jump real flat, which is dangerous at speed. I wanted to get a foal with a bit more bone on it, and a more compact back and back a lot of "junk in the trunk," ie. a big ass. We wanted to go with a warmblood as the sire to hopefully get these qualities, and looked at several stallions. I got everything I wanted so far as what traits were thrown into the foal. We'll know in about five or six years what her jumping ability is... warmbloods tend to mature slowly, so I really can't even start to break her under saddle until she's around three.

8. D. Wayne Lucas said what he looked for in a filly was...

"The head of a princess, the walk of a hooker and the rear-end of a fry cook".

I didn't know that warmbloods matured that slowly.

Cool... Do you have a website? Photos anywhere? I think I mentioned before that one of my trainers does that, too.

15. No website. Got some pictures.

We had a bad year this year. Filly trotter hurt her knees. Colt trotter was a late foal and was too immature to handle racing. He showed some real talent but, he needs to grow up a little bit.

Got a new foal on the ground end of May.

This is about 4 to 5 weeks ago.

If you want jumpers why are you messing with Devon?

I have two Abdullah foals (by my Advanced level 3-day eventing, Stakes-winning TB mare) and two Erin Go Bragh foals (same mare).

Devon is for the dressage nuts. We've never had to show at Devon for commercial success. Are you doing it for kicks? Whose your trainer?

Although I'd stack my foals against anyone's.....

will she keep that dark blanket, or is a Warmblood like an Appaloosa-subject to change for the first year or so?
