Need your positive energies for my dog, Winston --- Please.

Thursday my little yorkie, Winston, was hit by a car. Since Katrina bitch slapped my house and left me slab and rubble, I have been staying with my sister and her husband out in the country, about 20 miles north of the Coast. They have 3 plus acres and my pups are not used to the area. Whenever I get in my car, they look at me like "when we going home, ma?"

My brother-in-law has a shop at one end of the property where he does automobile upholstrey work. He is a craftsman and does the interiors for folks that spend ridiculous sums of money on their antique cars or kit hot rods. On Thursday morning, he had to go to a job offsite. The pups were in his shop and a couple stopped by for their $60k kit car that had just been completed.

The stupid woman left the gate wide open as they readied to leave with the car and inspected my BIL's work. I saw activity in the shop and the gate open and came running. I was able to get 2 of the pups in their kennels, but my little yorkie Winston, was no where to be found. When I asked the lady where the yorkie was, she said "Oh, I saw one run out the gate." As I chewed her out for leaving the gate open, I looked up and there was Winston, bloodied and suffering in the middle of the street.

I grabbed him up and ran to the house, chewing out the lady along the way, and calling for my sister. We got him to the vet but they weren't open. Sis pleaded at the door to let us in and eventually they did. Winston was x-rayed and he has a broken pelvis. They don't know about internal bruising and won't know until they operate. He also had some type of facial/head injury, but they couldn't x-ray him because he was so shocking and unstable.

The will do the first of two surgeries on him today in an effort to fix one hip at a time. While he is sedated today, they will x-ray his head to try to determine the extent of the injuries. :-(

My little Winston is just a sweet little 12lb bundle of fur and love. Please say some prayers or send the positive energies or good vibes or whatever it is you are comfortable doing.

Winston and my other dogs, Tollie and Sassie, are so confused and disoriented, they have no idea as to why we don't go home. We all can use your positive energies and prayers.

I feel so bad for the poor little guy.

There are Yorkie Rescue groups that could probably give you advice, if you have questions about how to keep him comfortable. If expenses get outrageous, they could probably help you collect funds by placing ads on their website. I donate to United Yorkie Rescue, which I believe to be highly reputable in their care of older and sick dogs.

When my puppy was neutered and limped around, I cried. I can only imagine how tough this is for you. I hope you take comfort in the fact that - even though he's suffering a lot - you are providing the kind of love and care that many puppies never get. And I believe that dogs can tell when people love them, which will help Winston recover.

And for anyone else reading this - United Yorkie Rescue provides permanent homes to dogs that are "unadoptable" because of very serious and specialized medical problems.

I don't want to solicit, but there's a link to amazon.com so that they get a percentage of whatever anyone buys anyway. A little help for them at no cost to any of us.

If anyone is looking for a dog, please consider a rescue group BEFORE a breeder, pet store, or puppy mill. There are rescue groups for every breed of dog you can imagine. You will never find a more grateful dog than dog found at a rescue group. Plus, you'll know what behavioral and medical issues exist.

54. Winston is a rescue dog. Friends had him, but had no idea how

to handle him (the wife hated dogs) and they kept him in a kennel all the time (small travel kennel). When she became pregnant, I offered to take care of him since she had her hands full with their 2 year old daughter. I've had him ever since.

88. Winston needs the prayers. The vet won't operate until he knows

which of his hip is least damaged. Then he will operate on the other hip. Winston has to stand and he really hasn't tried to yet. He is on pain meds, but the head injury may have just been he bit his own tounge, so that is good.

It is driving me crazy, but what can I do but wait and pray, pray and wait. Vet told me I could take him home and I told him that it would be silly since he, the vet, needs to make the call on his hips. How can he do that if Winston is with me? Also, don't think my brother-in-law can handle the stress of it.

I'm going to try to go see him on Thursday, if at all possible. It's so hard sometimes, trying to get things accomplished with my lot, with insurance, with FEMA, with Red Cross, with the city (permiting for the trailer) and trying to get work going. I can use some of those prayers too. x(

First of all, the vet is willing to operate. It's not like he told you he couldn't do anything for him. He's also apparently thinking that Winston can tolerate multiple surgeries. That, too, is a good sign. And it sounds like other than the pelvis, there were no internal injuries... and that is a tremendous relief!

I know you have had more than enough on your plate. It just isn't fair, and I'm sorry that your heart is breaking. Keep yourself surrounded by people who love you (and to hell with those who don't.).

Remind your BIL that it's not his fault... I'm sure he feels awful about what happened. (I'll add a prayer for him, too.)

104. Have you considered a doggie wheelchair.

Either the front or the back legs are suspended and the other pair pushes. Winston would be less mobile in the sense that he could only go places where he could wheel around, but I've seen many dogs do very well with them. Some places rent the carts, which I've found provided a little safety net for the puppies. No stairs though. And supervision is a good idea.
