Has anyone here witnessed/taken part in Restaurant food abuse?
Edited on Mon Sep-26-05 08:02 PM by DS1
Like spitting, dropping on floor, and other unpleasantness?

These commercials for "WAITing" are repulsive - even aside from that shitty no-name talentless Van Wilder asshole being in it.

So.. What gives?

3. Many years ago...
My first job at McDonalds sucked enough on its own. We had one asshole with a very bad attitude everytime he came in. So one night he pulls up to the drive through with a really hot chick in the Passenger seat. He ordered "no onions" on his burgers, and I can promise you there were no onions on that thing. not a single one.

I did however soak the burger patties in onion juice for about a minute and gave a very nice apology for the delay.

4. No. I was a bartender for 5 years
if I had seen anything like that, I would have refused to serve it, and possibly quit my job over it.

No asshole in a restaurant is worth doing something bad to their food or drinks--it's morally wrong.

5. I once heard two young male fast food employees joking about...
"secret sauce." I chased them behind the counter where they locked themselves in a storage room. The manager promised to fire them if they ever came out.

6. I'm not familiar with the commercial you describe, -
but in all my years of living with restauranteurs, chefs and working as slave labour in restaurants, I have never seen actual, intentional abuse of food by a foodservice professional.

I've seen some pretty scarey things done unintentionally, -people cutting up raw chicken and then whipping up a fruit salad on the same cutting board, or storing raw fish in a faulty drip pan directly over a case of lettuce, etc.

The thing is, most industry professionals, - people who work in modest to good quality chains or upscale standalones, - they live or die on repeat business and word of mouth reputation. Even the accusation of a bowl of phlegm chowder is enough to drive a place to bankruptcy.

7. Hell yes I have.
Right before entering college I worked at Kirby Lane Cafe here in Austin on the drunk shit... 10:00 P.M to 6:00 A.M.

I had the worst of the worst come in... obnoxious drunks after an evening out, their breakfast tacos contained my spit most times... or in their coffee. Even the cooks got into it, throwing flap jacks on the floor...etc.

Fuck obnoxious drunks... they deserved it! :P

8. I worked in restaurants for many years
Waitstaff mostly, but also bartender, kitchen & supervisor.

Never saw anything like that. (Okay, I have seen food hit the floor, but I've never seen it served afterward.)

13. We used to play hockey with the frozen burger patties,
but we never served them.

The worst food abuse I ever saw in the restaurant was by a customer - we had an African American lady who would come in, and ask us to re-deep-fry one of our fried whitings, and she'd want it BLACK.

But, she loved it that way! Had it every time, and kept coming back for it...

14. In high school a friend of mine worked at KFC.
Chicken bowling was a Friday night ritual. That's how they filled the buckets in advance of sales. Skimming the uncooked chicken across the floor was another amusement for the stoners who worked there.

17. A friend of mine worked at a Taco Time in the '80s
He used to sculpt blocks of refried beans with a hammer and chisel and a drill. And then they'd defrost them and serve them to customers. :puke:

18. I was the salad bar attendant at a chain diner
I got in trouble for making new macaroni salad instead of using the slimy days-old stuff that was left in the cooler. My manager told me I should just put the older salad on the bottom and some of the fresh stuff on top so it would look good. :puke:

Cutter's I think. FOOD FIGHT! got kicked out too. Managed to tell them loudly we'd been kicked out of much nicer places than theirs on the way out..

on Edit: OH by employees. not reading thoroughly. No. I haven't. Not in my years as a wait person. But I am paranoid of it happening

20. Yes
Nothing like spitting, although I do no some others who did. We would put hot peppers in the pizza sauce for obnoxious customers.

I was a cook and I didn't see anything too awful. I did see the "3 second rule" in play on occasion, but no tampering, no spitting, etc.

23. 12 years of restaurant service...
never saw or participated in any act of food abuse.
Either I was very sheltered, or it doesn't happen as often (where I worked)
I've heard plenty of stories, though. Had a server at a Pizza Hut say he spit in someone's breadsticks, and head a few other stories.
But I never saw it.

around here, I've heard of employees putting out cigarettes in the pizza. Worse things, too. But pizza hut is disgusting anyway...

25. Worked lots of fast food in my day.
Most of it on the 7:00 to 3:00 a.m. shift. Never did anything to harm a customer, no matter how obnoxious. TALKED about it all the time, but no one I knew ever did anything.

Hell, we all LIVED on fast food, didn't make sense to me.

27. I quit an A&P for ethical reasons...
Not for spite, but for profit... My first part-time job in high school was in a A&P's butcher department in New Jersey. In addition to cleaning the department and assisting the drunk butcher named Ralph, I was asked to do the following...

- Repackage expired Oscar Mayer luncheon meat as fresh wrapped cold cuts. (Open the packs and lay the bologna out in a foam tray and shrink wrap as fresh).

- Flip fresh pork and ham to always keep the pink side on display.

- Never throw anything (like bacon) away... Make ground beef of it. (Ugh)

I eventually quit dramatically (by throwing my white coat) for obvious ethical reasons.

28. I had a friend that worked at Godfather's Pizza...
and he said if there were any "unruly" customers, they'd do anything possible to ruin their pizza...either by spitting on it, putting boogers in it, or other, grosser things which I won't mention.

Of course, I was in high school (and naive) at the time, so I thought it was funny and didn't report it.

30. I was room service waiter in Miami, 1977. We had this lady who was
an ASSHOLE. She kept sending her eggs back saying that they were too wet, then too dry, then to damp, called me an incompetant drone. I didnt even cook the damn eggs! Well on my 4th trip up to the room I expressed my anger to a fellow waiter, a Cuban gentleman who had been doing this for 20+ years. He told me that he would take the lady her eggs. Before knocking on the door he opened the warming cover on the plate, lifted up the eggs, and hocked a mean loogie under them. He then knocked, served the lady, apologized for her troubles.
She must have liked the way they were cooked because she cleaned her plate.

Lesson: Never harrass or insult the people that cook or serve you your food.
NEVER!
