Do you consider yourself sophisticated?
Edited on Mon Sep-26-05 09:54 PM by mvd
Well, I'll evaluate myself:

music - I'm in the middle, as I'm a fan of much of the current teen POP/ROCK AND Radiohead. I'm not afraid to like what I like.

books - I just like what I like

TV and movies - I like comedies and sports the most, so subtract points here

politically - well, I think my liberal positions are more common sense than sophisticated

dress - no, I'm not at all here

conversationally - I watch what I say with strangers, so I'm a bit here

Overall, then, I'm not sophisticated, but I'm not simplistic either.

1. Not in the slightest.
I'm actually somewhat provincial, i.e. back-assed, hickish...

3. Yes, and this is why I don't fit in with standard American culture
which is based on ignorance.

Sophisticated AND nuanced.

5. Good way of saying it!
In the current political climate, I'd have to get sophistication points even though I don't equate sophisticated with liberal. :-)

6. Hell no. I cut my own hair.
I wear the same jeans for two weeks.

Reading is like taking medicine. I only started reading when it came time to catch up with the Bush crimes.

My music goes from Henry Purcell to Lee Morgan to Mondo Topless.

I love The Young Ones. Uh oh. Sophistication alert on red.

Same in the politics department. Common sense IS liberal.

7. Well, yes, I do
Music - I like good music, any kind of good music.
Books - I read a lot of junk
TV - oxymoron
Movies - Horror, Fantasy, Mysteries, i.e., junk
dress - Old Navy? hardly
Conversationally - I'm good with languages, does that count.

I guess you'd never know I'm sophisticated from my cultural choices. :D

9. I have no idea
What is sophistication? I don't think one could label themselves as sophisticated and truly be sophisticated. It's like someone trying to be intelligent or being a non-conformist like everyone else.

13. Very, very, street-wise
But not sophisticated.
I still like metal and punk rock (at 45) (but I listen to whatever catches my fancy, including bagpipes)
I watch as little tv as possible
Liberal is like you say, common sense
Kind of sporty/hippy way of dressing (I exersize a lot)
I never argue with invisable people on the internet, but I have great conversations over coffee. But I like to swear for emphasis--a lot. I don't think sophisticated people use some of the words I do.

15. I don't think I'm too sophisticated
Although there are certainly some aspects of my life in which I could be considered as such in some way.

music - I have a very eclectic taste in music. I have a great fondness for classical music, for one, and love everything from 60s oldies to some current day. I particularly like pop that "means" something, and I can't say I like too much that is too loud and bass-y in an obnoxious way. I tune out hard rock and punk rock, and won't even give rap a chance. And techno just sounds metallic to me and not in a nice way. I don't care for most country music, though I have had some songs that I've liked, especially older ones. So, as far as music is concerned, I guess I could be considered "sophisticated."

books - I read non-fiction books, as in political, "how-to" categories, science fiction, fantasy and mysteries. Not too sophisticated, I don't think!

TV and movies - My taste in films runs the gamut of action-adventure, SF, comedies, dramas, and most other subjects. My TV watching is mainly SF, fantasy, the supernatural, drama and the occasional sitcom. Normally, I hate TV sitcoms with a passion, but I do like Two and a Half Men, Still Standing, and well, that's about it. The verdict is still out on some others. I'm not into sports, so I don't watch normally. I do like some high brow stuff, but I also like some low brow stuff as well. I guess I run about even on this area.

politics - I'm a Massachusetts lliberal. I think there is some kind of rule about that. ;)

dress - Jeans and tee-shirts. That's it. And no high heels. I hate high heels.

social scene - I have largely become a homebody, though I used to enjoy throwing parties. Perhaps someday, I will once again have a party when I feel up to it. That time, however, isn't now. I do enjoy meeting people, and can usually find subject matter to discuss with just about anyone.

other - I've travelled a good deal, and can intelligently discuss many different topics of conversation. I also have many interests, including writing, photography, mythology, history and crafts, and I can think quick on my feet.

I don't think I'm a complete backwater person, and sophistication is a very subjective way of looking at a person's overall persona. It's easier to look at someone over a long period of time to see if they are moronic or better than average. It's difficult to determine one's own level of sophistication.

17. I consider myself pretentious...
:P

Seriously, I like things that are sophisticated, but I leave most of them in the store or at the museum. I'm also not afraid to like things that aren't complicated or advanced. However, I just don't have the resources to be as sophisticated as I might be in the future.

I'm sophisticated under the circumstances, I suppose...

25. I used to aspire to sophistication. Too damn much work.
The worst was when I started to bore myself. I decided a few years ago to just be the dork I am, and stop embarrassing myself. I still can't believe how much time this frees up.
