DU Computer geeks - I am having resource problems
How do I look up what is being the resource hog so I can shut it down.

I am on a laptop (2.66 ghz P4 768 mb RAM) running WinXP.

Something has commandered 3/4 of my pagefile, and I do not know what it is.

1. CTRL-ALT-DEL
That'll bring up the task manager and show you what services are running, but that's an imperfect solution.

Download and install Codestuff Starter.

http://codestuff.cjb.net/

It gives you much more control over your task list and startup programs. It'll show you what services are running, how much memory each is using, and will allow you to shut them down. Note: It will let you shut down services that are essential to your computer actually functioning, so use with caution on anything you're not sure about.

Having offered that advice, you may have a virus or a bunch of spy/adware taking up resources. Starter may (or may not) show you that they are running, but you'll need something that removes them completely to fix the problem. Spyware Search&Destroy, Adaware, etc.

6. Sometimes, just restarting will help when it is a resource problem

I go onto other things if this does not help, but I don't want to overwhelm you.
I recently received alot of spyware from where, I don't know.
I had bonzi buddy, and 66 instances of Xupiter, and 9 of anorum.
Spybot Search and Destroy took care of it for me. It is free.

7. I am closer to finding the problem
I have rebooted several times tonight...

Something crunched my install of ZoneAlarm. I need to go into safe mode to uninstall it, then come back full and reinstall it...I think it has to do with corrupted files...

8. Just the thing you wanted to stay up late doing, huh?
It does seem to me, anyway, that these things crop up when I am least able to handle them...

When I'm hungry or sleepy or tired...or a combo of all .......

Wish I could help......

9. Yeah, I am currently doing a virus scan...
and spyware scans.

When those are done I will be shutting her down, and booting up in safe mode to uninstall the firewall. Only to reinstall it later.

Good to see you tonight!
