On the proper nature of boundaries between the Lounge and GD
Comrades, I come to you to discuss an issue that has been bothering me for quite some time. It seems that cleavage has developed between the Lounge and GD. Normally, I would salute this development as I generally appreciate the development of cleavage, but in this case I have noticed a destructive element. It seems that there are some threads in GD that clearly would be more at home in the Lounge. If one wishes to post about their pet, an anecdote from the day, or how much a certain band sucks, one should come to the Lounge.

What is to blame for this problem? The time for finger pointing has arrived! It is clearly the case that GD in it's typical insufferable snobbishness has bred its own breed of wise-asses, who believe that their wise-assery is too intelligent, too sophisticated, too "relevant" for the lounge. This is no doubt a result of the splitting of GD into two forums after primary-related discussion had transformed the forum into a war zone. Now that GD: Politics remains of the primary forum, GD itself is somewhat adrift and has no clear conversational content. In order to maintain their leading post count, they have been forced to muscle in on what is traditionally our territory. True, there are certain posts which belong in GD, such as this http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4901273

While posts such as this
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4901312
would be better off here.

What must we do? We must alert the shit out of posts in GD that look like they belong in the lounge. Only then will GD be what it is supposed to be and the lounge will fulfill its destiny as largest forum on DU

...it's totally irrelevent, but yet they get their self-righteous wacking sticks out, when, of course, the proper response is to pay homage to the absurdity

16. I completely agree. However, I got TOTALLY flamed for
gently suggesting to a poster that, while his/her thread was funny, it perhaps belonged in the lounge. Some apparently, do not wish to sully thier reputations by posting in the lounge.

17. Which is why you should never deal with the poster!
Alert and send it to the Mods.

Jokers in GD are dangerous and can only be made safe by being forcibly returned to the lounge habitat where they belong. Here we can begin the healing

21. As a newbie, I am intrigued by this conversation...I, too, have
noticed the "cleavage" issue and the friendly, but also serious, sense of competition between the forum boards. What's UP with that??!

My question: Does it really MATTER all that much? I mean, c'mon, aren't we all just here to have FUN, anyway? And besides, isn't this in the realm of what the Moderators handle? Isn't this their call on what constitutes "clear conversational content"?

Can't we all just GET ALONG?? :eyes:

Please excuse my impertinence and maybe you meant your post all in jest, but just in case not, I had to give my two cents. BTW, though, I had to LOL at your last line of the Lounge "fulfilling it's destiny".

I guess Great Things really ARE happening here at little ole DU.

That's sooooooo beautiful! ;)

22. The answers to your questions
What's up is that we hate them!
To the other questions.
1. Yes.
2. No.
3. Maybe.
4. Yes, but experience indicates that user input (alerts, complaints, etc.) has had a huge impact on the interpretation of the rules. For more info about that, ask some of the regulars about Kirstie Alley and the Fat Actress series.
5. HELL NO!

As far as being in jest, I have a hard time telling the difference anymore. I am stuck in a state of half-joking, but it is necessary to remember that this also means that I am half serious.

23. Thanks for your sarcastically amusing answers, JVS.
So, I take it Kirstie Alley was a topic on GD once and everyone was thoroughly disgusted by a topic so mundane?

Whatever! I'm still tryin' to get a feelin' for this place. The humor sometimes escapes me.

Hey, have a beer...on ME!

25. Kirstie Alley was a lounge issue where a small group of DUers were...
so upset by discussion of the show "Fat actress" that administration banned mention of either the show or Kirstie Alley. It was a case of lobbying hard enough to get the mods to re-interpret existing rules to the point where a whole new rule developed. My point is that the line deciding what belongs where is drawn by administrators and mods, but the people of DU have an ability to push on their arms and thereby affect the line's position.

cheers on the beers :toast:

30. Once more this goes back to the schism of 04
GD used to be a primarily political forum, but infighting during the primaries forced a split in order to have a serious forum where more was discussed than "Your candidate sucks donkey balls" In fact, in order to keep a lid on the outrageous hostility of the GD:primaries forum, a user would be banned from the primary forum after 5 deleted messages. An upshot of this rule was that people began alerting on every post in hopes of getting it deleted. But I digress. After the primaries, they converted it to a forum on issues relating specifically to the election. Now they do politics which is such a broad category that GD is left with very little to call its own.

33. Here's how it goes:
GD politics is for politics

GD is for issue items - substantive non-political stuff (substantive being the operative word)

The lounge is for anything that doesn't fit in those two categories.
