Allow me to crow - I am so proud of my son!

Academically speaking, my son has always been very bright, but not very organized. He has, in the past, been one of those kids that does extremely well on tests, but never turned his homework in. Because of this, his middle school grades really suffered.

I did not fight hard enough to get him into the gifted programs. I did fight, but it was like an irresistable force meeting an immovable object. My efforts went THUD.

He just started his freshman year in high school. So far he has turned all of his assignments in and has a 3.68 GPA on a 4.0 scale. He likes high school and has, so far, been very motivated to do well. I could not be more pleased.

Sometimes it just takes a while to get into the groove and to bring the grades up. For me it was having the school district take me to juvenile court and being put on probation.....LOL.

I would guess that for a parent it is a lot off the shoulders to have a child doing well in school. Good for him!

4. It helps that he only has 4 classes

In middle school they had 8 classes a term, almost impossible to keep all that organized.

Congrats to your son, and to YOU! Keep encouraging him - it will pay off. I just got back from visiting my college freshman son. He's there on a full academic scholarship which he earned by doing exactly what your son is doing. Sounds like a bright future awaits your boy. No wonder you're proud!

6. Speaking from personal experience.

Not doing homework is usually an indicator that he's either not being challenged enough or not being engaged enough by his teachers. I know I used to fall into that category, finding myself only doing the work that was given by teachers that actively stimulated me, either through the scale of the work or the context of the classroom interaction.

Just something to keep in mind should he start flagging again. Congrats either way though!!! :woohoo:

8. I didn't hit my stride until my Junior YEar...

Before that I was distracted, listless and bored with school...

But starting my Junior year, I climbed from a rank of about 175 to 62 by the time I graduated, returning to Honors English and getting bumped to AP History

10. That's great - we have parallel sons

We sent our son to Huntington Learning over the summer and first two months of school to help him get more focused, because he has a tendency to drift off in his own head and turn a half hour assignment into unending unfinished homework of doom.

So far this year he's gotten all his assignments in and he got 100% on his first math test.

We're going to have to stop this month cause it's so damn expensive. I've been scraping by for four months - if he went the whole time they said he should go it would cost like 13K - what a catch 22, sorry, dude, can't pay for college cause I spent it all trying to get you into college.

I bought him a study skills book and a reading comprehension book, he read both of them and I believe it is working.

I HATED middle school and almost never turned my homework in! I was horrible at organization. High school ended up being a definite step up.

BTW, I graduated seventh in my class with a 4.032 GPA, so now you have something to hold your son to. BWAHAHA!

(Are we the same person??) My son surprised the heck out of me after three years of barely passing middle school classes: he loves high school! :D

I was so worried about this school, too, as it has the worst test scores in the city, and has been rumored to be violent. I tried like hell to get him into a "better" school but the waiting list was full.

And now he's flourishing. :)

I know about having a son who's a TAG student. He could read the book, listen and participate in the classroom discussion and put it down and not study at all then come in and Ace the test. This was in any subject. But he would not do homework. His TAG teacher told us that his performance on the exams validated his point of view. In his mind he demonstrated mastery of the subject matter so why do homework?
