How do you store your CD's? Still use the plastic case?
I have about 150 CD's that are taking up a hell of a lot of room and am thinking of chucking the plastic cases and just keeping the CD and it's little booklet.

What's your efficient way of storing all your CD's?

I hate being a pack rat...x(

1. Most of mine are in those 250-CD holding albums
When I put my CDs in those, I went from a shitload of cubic feet to just about one cubic foot for storage of all.

And I saved all the booklets, and store them in those cardboard CD holding/storage boxes. I have three of those boxes of inserts.

Were I not living in NYC at the time and getting sick of the wasted space, I might not have done it. But I'm glad I did. Now, when I hit the road, I can just grab one of the albums and voila, I have 200+ CDs to choose from while driving.

:-)

2. I got one of those albums for my live boots (don't come with art anyway)

and I'm thinking about doing the same for my regular CDs. The only thing I don't like about the albums is this -- I am completely anal and I absolutely must have things in alphabetical order by artist. And the album I got, you couldn't add a leaf (like you can do with a three ring binder) so you had to leave strategically blank pages throughout the album in the event of buying new CDs. Maybe they make them like that so you can add them, I dunno.

3. i'm a cd slob...no cases or wrong case
i still can't find my copy of Jewels for Sophia by Robyn Hitchcock.
I'm sure it will turn up in the case for Paintshop Pro or something that I'll never look in.

4. On a hard drive.
I rip the CD once and don't touch it again. It goes in a box and collects dust.

6. Two 500-disc shelves.
Why buy CDs if you're not going to show them off?

MP3 is a lossy format and (to my ears, at least) sounds like garbage. If I rip discs to anything, it's FLAC. (http://flac.sourceforge.net)

My 500+ CDs stay on two large shelves, prominently and proudly displayed.

7. Yup...I do that too....
Keep the originals on the shelf. Rip into the computer for portable use, play original in a good CD player for real hi-fi listening. I like AAC for casual/desktop use, not as good as linear PCM but for the car or office it's fine.

I've never bought an mp3, I won't pay for compressed audio. I still like flipping through the bins for a CD and having something tangible to take home. If I want an mp3 or AAC file of a track it's easy enough to import the CD into iTunes.

Of course, I still love vinyl too...but I think I'd raise eyebrows if I set up a turntable in my office at work... :D

14. I have a turntable.
Question:

Do you think it's ethical to download the mp3 without paying if you own the vinyl?

8. I have most of them in two enclosed shelves with..
glass doors, and two CD towers. They all fit nicely along the walls of the computer room.

9. I always keep the original boxes
I have a CD tower that's perfectly suited for boxes, including the multiple-CD boxes.

The only things I can't store in the tower are my Motorhead compilaton (black leather case), my Shostakovich string quartets (oversized paper display box), and my copy of Negativland's Death Sentences of the Polished and Structurally Weak (package looks like an owner's manual folio for a new car).

10. In the car I use a CD "book"-

No cases, just slide the CD's in a pocket. At home I use a CD tower upstairs, and downstairs I have a wood cabinet with lots of CD sized drawers and store them in the jewel cases. I'm really picky about keeping them in the right cases and such. Downright anal in fact.

11. If you're doing that...
Why not just burn copies of the CDs and sell the originals on Amazon? Maybe get a good hard drive and rip them to high-quality MP3 or FLAC or whatever, too.

Just a thought... I've slowly been doing that with "non-essential" stuff or one-hit wonders.

12. We've got one wall dedicated to cd's in cases--they're in a
giant bookcase. We've got a few giant CD books of mixes and burned copies of cd's we like but sold the original versions of them on ebay. Finally, since we need a few more books and are too cheap to buy them, we have stacks of cds in spools--mostly mixes and radio shows--on a table near the giant cd bookcase. They are arranged by genre, then alphabetically backwards,(it's the boy's doing--I don't know why so don't ask. I think it originally had to do with moving in and out of apartments with ease.), within that.

And then there's the vinyl. Welcome to life with a band guy/DJ in your house.
