OK, I'd like fish for dinner, but I have a moral dilemma:
What hasn't been overfished and depleted?

What is caught without using horrible nets that kill birds and turtles and dolphins and ??

What doesn't have mercury and other nasties in it?

And finally, if possible, what doesn't have a zillion bones?


God, eating anything good these days is fraught with moral dilemmas. I won't eat meat (aside from fish) mostly because of the horrible slaugherhouse conditions animals face before dying. I would love to have a good filet mignon, but can't face the grocery store meat department. Maybe I should find a kosher butcher? What are their slaughter standards?

Fish is full of contaminants and big fishing companies are destroying the oceans.

But I can't just live on celery sticks. I loooove fish. But am currently clueless.

Anyone have any suggestions?

1. You can shop at Whole Foods. Their meat is all done under kosher standard
even though it's not kosher. It's good, too.

Also, make sure that you get eggs that are hormone free and from "uncaged hens." I get Naturally Nested. The shells are about five times thicker than the transluscent ones you see in the corporate eggs.

I also recently got some very good beef from a local farmer's market.

2. yeah, I buy the eggs labeled "vegetarian-fed, cage-free hens"
unfortunately, I currently live in nowheresville and there isn't a Whole Foods within 2 hours of here. Crapola.

3. tilapia
it's farm raised here in the states. boneless filets. google "tilapia" for info/recipes. tastes good too -- i made blackened tilapia last week.

I think that if you get organic anything, you are already on the right track. It is a moral dilemma. I give up meat (I don't eat fish) every year for Lent, and it's very interesting for me. I always drop a couple of pounds too.

9. lots of produce stands...
and I have heard that some locals were going to try to start a co-op... I should follow up on that. I don't plan to live here forever, but while I do, I'd like to have a few more choices than Bi-Lo.

5. If it's already dead, just eat it
If you don't somebody else will, or it will go to waste.

In the future, just be more conscious of where your food comes from. Join a local food co-op if you can.

8. yeah, but I don't want the 'demand' to be there...
I hate to see it go to waste - and so much does, b/c gorcery stores always want to show there's plenty of choice or whatever bullshit says they've got to have 20 dead cows for sale at a time --

but, I don't want to be part of the cycle, so I usually just go without. Today, though, I've really, really been craving fish (and have a mild allergy to tuna, so a quick-fix tuna sandwich is out).

There's a giant one somewhere out there that could feed a family of 4 for at least a couple of years.

You don't want them to get too big-- otherwise it's like chewing on rubber. But wait, it's squid, so it's like chewing on rubber anyway.
