a movie about the affectionate relationship between a boy suffering from sore throat and a little girl in his playground who goes through much trouble looking for sore throat medicine to help the boy. It's a touching movie, and kinda comical to see the girl's different ways of solving problems to get to the sore throat medicine.

Ask for it at any Blockbuster.

I'm kidding...it's a joke. Deep Throat is a bad movie for kids. check out the other ones on this thread.

How about Maid in manhattan. Nice romantic comedy with a family touch.

3. 'Searching for Bobby Fischer'.

Josh Waitzkin, the main character in the (true) story, cut his teeth playing chess with the chess hustlers in Washington Square Park, and then I think he was a Manhattan Chess Club regular as he grew and improved.

What I thought was sad was the way the movie felt the need to "change" the kid who was his chess nemesis, Jeff Sarwer. The real Jeff Sarwer was apparently under the influence of some crazed Svengali showbiz chess dad, they both had shaved heads and this whole cult like obsession going on, very interesting people.

The movie made Sarwer a typical alligator shirt wearing preppy jerk.

Not a great film by any stretch of the imagination, but it fits the criteria.

5. On the Town

Yeah, it's a musical but it was one of the first feature films shot on location and the 40's locations are priceless.

If I can think of a good non-musical will post again. I love musicals but I know how kids are. :-)

If rated today it would probably be a PG. The violence isn't too bad except for what they do to Brando, but it is a great and important film.

But she's been talking about NYC, and she wants to show them what the city looks like, and entertain them too, I guess. She just asked me for ideas, and I was hoping to get some ideas from you guys.

kinda shows what NYC USED TO look like.

For example: West Side Story was filmed on location in the upper west side of manhattan. Back then it was a slum and just after filming was completed, the city tore down the area to put up Lincoln Center. Today, the upper west side of Manhattan is a very beautiful area, but very exclusive, very expensive to live in.
If you want to see what upper west side of manhattan looks like today, in a modern film, then try "You've Got Mail" (with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan)

Ooooooooooooo and I just remembered one great film based in NYC:

The Producers with Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder.

It takes place in Depression era New York, but in reality, it was shot on a backlot in California. Though Warbucks mansion is an actual mansion that really exists, but not in NYC as portrayed in the film, but on Long Island.

The Seven Year Itch starring Marilyn Monroe (though even for a clean 1950s movie, it might still be a little too risque for 11 and 12 year olds)

The Apartment (with Jack Lemmon) but this also has subject matter that might not be suitable for 11-12 year olds.
