"Give UP" from "Magnolia". It's ALMOST sappy, but not quite.

"Baba O'Reily" montage in "Summer of Sam". The power of the Who and the power of Spike Lee's knack for the visual...

"Where is My Mind?", at the end of "Fight Club". Kaboom.

"In Your Eyes", in "Say Anything". What teenaged girl didn't fall in love with John Cusack balancing that boombox on his head?

In the beginning, when Salieri is describing to his confessor the music he'd heard at the Royal Archbishop's palace... "like a rusty squeezebox. And then . . . high above it . . . an oboe . . . a single note, hanging there, unwavering . . . until a clarinet took it over and sweetened it into a phrase of such delight . . ." oh, god, no wonder that's one of the best movies ever made.

53. Mozart's Grand Partita

for winds.

As a clarinet player it's always been one of my favorite pieces. It's a real, honest to goodness masterpiece. It's just as mature, complex, and beautiful as any of his compositions but because it's a wind piece it doesn't get played that much.

I'm like you, I was bowled over when I first saw this scene with Salieri's voice over while you see Mozart conducting the Grand Partita.

Check out the recording of this piece performed by the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. They are, for the most part, the principal wind players from the Concertebow Orchestra.

AFVN redux. I was post-Cronauer, but I knew AFVN-star Cris Noel very well. She dated the married flight surgeon of NAF Cam Rahn Bay. She often partied with us at the famed NAF Cam Rahn "O" Club. She often made risque remarks on the air about Capt. Wendell E.'s door knocker .. a carved 15" penis with complete lower works (the balls actually did the knocking, the crank was the handle). It was a sight. She was too! Vietnam was rock-and-roll. Rock-and-roll was Vietnam.

Last I heard, Adrian was living in Pennsylvania. He had really done a gig in Crete, too, before getting stationed in RVN. Robin Williams was fairly true to the life script of Adrian Cronauer. There is a cameo in the great movie Hamburger Hill of Adrian Cronauer's famous wake up call: "Gooooood Morning Viet Nam!" It was as real as a stonk of mortar rounds.

20. A lot of the tunes from Alexander Nevsky are fucking brilliant

Even though it was a cheesy propaganda film in some ways, Eisenstein was such a genius, and Prokofiev's score is so absolutely superb that it's very enjoyable even as it drags around. The music backing Alexander's entry into Pskov is just one of the most incredible moments of musical catharsis I've seen in film. Also the backing for the Teutonic knights is effectively malevolent and properly evocative of nasty Roman Catholic imperialism. :P

Visually that scene looked like something out of an old book of fairy tales. The music with Enya's enchanting voice was overwhelming, one of the most captivating scenes in any movie.

The music, I think it was Ligetti when the second monolith is found in 2001: A Space Odysey.

Wendy Carlos's version of the Deus Irae used at the beginning of The Shining.

The organ arrangement of Beethoven's 7th, second movement, used for the opening of Zardoz.

Ennio Moricone wrote the soundtrack, the tune played at this point is titled "amor del oro", or "the love of gold".

Morricone is a god. He has scored 533 movies since 1961. It boggles the mind sometimes how much great music he has written.

I could not imagine Leone's films without Morricone's music.

70. 2 moments in the movie "Glory" with the same theme music

One is where the regiment, finally wearing their uniforms, marches through the streets going off to war and the crowds come out to cheer them. The other is the moment when the regiment marches towards Fort Wagner between lines of white Union troops, as we approach the climactic last charge.

Another worth mentioning is the Love Theme From El Cid. El Cid is one of my favorite films of all time for its sheer entertainment value. The moment when the Rodrigo and Chimena realize they love each other and can't live without each other and that hopelessly beautiful Spanish sounding music comes on it just makes me thankful I have ears to hear.
