How long do dogs stay in heat?

Scout the World's Cutest Jack Russell Mix is in heat...and has been for about 4 or 5 days now....WHEN is this going to end???

3. I think it is something like 1-2 weeks

but it depends on how you count it. Are you starting when the blood started flowing or the time after that. Word to the wise, do not let her go outside alone. Some local or stray dog might smell her and go over or under a fence to get her. Of course, my rat terrier can probably outrun most other dogs, so I think a Jack Russell is pretty quick.

5. Oh, she never goes outside unless she is on her harness

She is faster than anything I have ever seen....if we lost her, I would be depressed--and the cat would cry--seriously, they love each other.

She can't even get out...unless she can sneak out the door, down the stairs, and then reach the elevator buttons-

6. I think they have longer and longer bouts of it closer and closer

together until they are perpetually ready... Try some puppy panties or, better yet, have her spayed.

8. Her vet is a friend of mine; she said it's safer to wait until she's out

of heat....Believe me, if she hadn't said that, this post would have been, "How long should I keep Scout quiet after surgery?" :)

7. My little mini-pin stayed in heat for a month.

And right afterwards, she went right to the doc and got fixed. She had to wear a doggie diaper which wasn't fun b/c she wasn't all the way potty trained.

On edit, I was surprised at how soon she started to go into heat. She was only about 6 months.
