when we moved into our house (on a very small, crowded street in the city, in a neighborhood that is being bought up & turned into apartments/houses for mostly college kids), the house next door to us was torn down -- by hand, with sledgehammers, etc. this took over a month, in the summer. at the same time, the neighbors behind us ripped down the wall that separates the back patio areas, so we couldn't sit outside or use our patio until a new wall went up, which took over 2 months. the next year, the vacant house on the other side of us was remodeled/rebuilt, which took 8 months. it is literally 3 feet from our house, so that was more noise. this year, the house two doors up demolished an old addition and built a new one, turning it into a 3-unit apartment. there is NOWHERE near enough parking on our street for residents AND contractors, so parking was a game of chance, and the noise was fucking unbearable. the worst part was that my fiancee was working from home for the first two years, and had to put up with the noise all day while she worked, and got catcalls from the contractors every time she walked down the street.
basically, our street has been "under construction" for the 3 years we've lived here. now, i'm determined to stick it out. i'm stubborn.
