TV Tonight: "Night Stalker'' back

For years, network people have talked about remaking "Night Stalker,'' the show that involved gruff newspaper reporter Carl Kolchak (Darren McGavin), who kept stumbling into stories of the supernatural that no one believed.

Even though "Stalker'' lasted for just two terrific made-for-TV movies and a deservedly short-lived weekly series, it became an iconic, influential piece of TV. ("The X-Files'' was one of the later series inspired by "Stalker.'') Now, ABC has finally taken a shot (9 tonight), and the first two episodes bring very mixed results even though the series is the work of top-notch TV writer Frank Spotnitz ("The X-Files.'')

Tonight's opener is a muddled mess, a mix of the original pilot and an awful lot of reshooting. (Do look for a "cameo'' by McGavin as the Kolchak of a bygone era.)

2. number one reason I will not watch

Carl Kolchak does not need a Scully.

This show is not Kolchak. It is X-Files all over again. That was an OK show, even a great show at times but Kolchak was about character and Darren McGavin's Carl Kolchak was one of the greatest characters in TV history.

They got some good looking child playing him this time.

7. Stuart Townsend.

He was also Lestat in the movie version of Queen of the Damned.

I like the dark, pale look. Like I said, I'll tape it and see if it's any good(but I don't expect it to hold up to the original).

I'd really rather see Bodies on BBCA... but my husband used to be a huge Night Stalker fan, so...

5. I loved the original

"Night Stalker", so I'm planning on watching the new version for the first few weeks. I like C.S.I., but got a little bored with it last season. If the new "Night Stalker" doesn't hold my interest after three weeks, I'll go back to C.S.I.

I love, love, love the original series/movies and I guess I'm somewhat interested in this one but I know it will never live up to the original.

However, today I saw that Gabrielle Union is in it, and I liked her a lot in Crossing Jordan, so another reason to watch it. :)

It's the annual blessing of the animals in honor of St. Francis' feast day on Oct. 4.

He just loves other animals and people so hopefully this will not be too traumatic for him.

9. McGavin made the original show. Townsend blows.

The writing and general atmosphere of the original show was terrific. It was funny as well as scary, and McGavin played it perfectly. He really made you root for the poor shlub in the seersucker suit and the straw hat who kept running into these incredible situations.

Now we've got some Brit pretty-boy (not the strongest actor in the world, mind you) playing the Kolchak role all moody-broody. We're talking about a bunch of MONSTERS, for crying out loud; how can anyone post-Buffy really take it that seriously?

Ten episodes until cancellation, tops. Against CSI, maybe not even eight.

16. Well FUCK...our ABC station has been out since Rita blew thru here....

....so I don't get to watch it :( That show freaked me OUT as a kid...the one with the man who came outta that casket with just whites for eyes and walks around like that....ooooo still gives me chills for anyone to roll their eyes back in their head. :scared:
