Okay, my Mom was a Home Ec teacher, really strict on the
manners and table etiquette and what not...

We had it drilled into our heads as to how to behave properly when we were around compnay....

(BTW, Leftisright's post in another thread about insisting that dinner be together as a family with no TV brought this memory back)...

So, I am so into this girl....

Right out of high school...

Beautifull, in a long straight haired seventies way complete with the tight ribbed sweater, no what I mean.... ;)

Anyway, we go to this restaurant and I am smokin', making her laugh, talking about current events (How bout that Nixon) and generally behaving in a way that I thought would at least lead to second base....

So we order the food, chat and then the food is brought before us.....

Me, being well trained and all, wait until everything is put down before me before I start to eat....

this girl, well she attacks her food, using her fork like she was stabbing westward and holding her knife like she was going to cut someones heart out....

Well, whatever chance at chub went south as I watched her wolf down her food like there was someone gonna come and take it away from her....

I ended up droppin her off at her house, a purely Platonic kiss ended the evening and I never dated her again....

CURSE YOU MOM AND YOUR GOOD DAMN TABLE MANNERS........

1. I don't know why this story struck me as funny, but it did!
Have you ever considered that maybe your mom did you a favor?

Maybe that girl was a disaster waiting to happen......

I know, I know...you lusted for her....and then her table manners turned you off......

Worse things could have happened, my dear WC......I"m not sure what, but .........

OK, just call me Dr.Phil.......

Good to see you around and about tonight.....Great story, BTW....

2. Hey now, don't curse your mom!
She did you a favor, speaking as someone who hates watching people eat in that way! Besides, nothing wrong with being brought up with manners. Some women actually find that attractive!

14. Gack, who would want to?
Or with a man (more to my taste) with bad table manners? I've been around people who chew with their mouths open, and having sex with them would be the LAST thing on my mind!

5. Having standards is nothing to lament
If you settle for someone boorish, you'll end up regretting it every day of your life. Why subject yourself (and her) to that?

7. Wow WCGreen
I had no idea you were such a momma's boy. ;)

Seriously though, I'm the same way at the dinner table. My pet peeves are talking with your mouth full of food, elbows on the table, and not putting your napkin on your lap.

15. Momma's boy......
Well, in a way yes and in a way no.....

My dad and mom argued and battled over me as a child....

So much so that I could probably qualify for a two parter on the Dr. Phil show....

But in the end, I guess I turned out alright.....

Bad manners are indicative of a whole host of bad habits. Just look at this example.

23. Your Mother would have loved me!
My family raised me with all of the grace of a southern woman. You often tease me about eating supper while you are eating dinner but as you know I am old fashioned in some quaint ways. I always knew which fork, spoon, knife, glass and dish were to be used for what and in which order.

There were things that were not talked about in public or in the presence of the opposite sex (oops - saying 'sex' wasn't allowed either).

I took Home Ec two years in a row. My dressmaking skills were so acute that one of the jobs that I did very successfully was to teach adults to cut and sew clothing for themselves. Making a dress with a sewn-down box pleated skirt, set-in sleeves and stand up collar was very precise work. I was a perfectionist, it had to 'look' right and 'fit' right!

Yes, your Mother would have loved me - most Moms did.

Mom didn't really care for that many of my girlfriends...

She kinda liked my wife, but not really all that much....

I wish she could have met you....
