Poll question: Another C.G. Computer Poll.
Edited on Fri Sep-30-05 01:44 PM by Crazy Guggenheim
How often do you totally backup your system format the disk and reinstall the software?

Note:

I recommend every six months for heavy users. Nine at most, for medium. At least once a year for light.

4. I couldn't vote
I used to do it every 3-4 months. I had a small amount of info on the box...then I found the dj mix site and got broadband. And Flashgot. And Firefox. And extra protection. There are signs I need to write zeros and reload-I just can't spend mass time doing the back up. I was going to get and external hard drive, but I am sort of (read: extremely) strapped for $$$.

My box has not been reloaded since the end of Feb, 2004. And it was reloaded 3-4 times betwen Christmas eve 2003 and then :grr:

7. You can schedule backups while you''re sleeping. Then over the
period of, say a few days, you;ll have all your backups and you can format and reinstall. It *saves time*.

21. Well live updates is working again
I think Norton screws shit up. So does Zone Alarm, which I also run. I think when I DO reload, I use Kerio and something else...

23. Norton does slow things up. Are you running Zone Alarm and
Norton AV/Firewall?

30. I think so
It's NAV 2005, which I think comes with a firewall, which was not my intention. But my ZA stopped at 4.0, because when I downloaded 5.0, it trashed my NVidia, WMP and ZA .dll files, which took me about 3 days to figure out. ZA denied it when I sent them the obligatory WTF! nastygram, then 2 weeks later, I got a form email inviting me to try again.

The NAV worm protection update thinger does not work, although it did for the first few months after I updated. I did everything the Symantec site said to do, and there's two hours I'll never get back. This shit blows-it does freaky shit a lot-like the one file scan it did when I came out of standby this morning (manual standby-it doesn't always go into standby by itself). Or the "You need to register!" BS it did a couple of weeks ago...:grr:

I just look at this crap as 'The Work-Around Challenge'

:P

25. There are other ways to bump performance without having to do that
Yeah, if you system is streamlined reload is faster. But like I said below. As you approach a terabyte it becomes less efficient to do a reload.

26. Maybe. But with all that data one has to "take more care of it" for
fragmentation, etc.
