Joss Whedon's Serenity is a big middle finger to FOX and Murdoch.
Edited on Fri Sep-30-05 02:11 PM by Melodybe
Loved Buffy, loved Angel, never really got to watch more than a few episodes of Firefly. At the time, I was so mad at Joss for completely dicking over all the fans that wanted Spike and Buffy to live happily ever after, that I refused to let him toy with my emotions anymore by investing in his new show.

So while I did enjoy the episodes I saw of Firefly, I purposely didn't watch it cause of the anger.

But since all of my friends and 2 of my brothers psychotically loved Firefly now I'm going to see it's big screen debut Serenity on Saturday. I was kinda excited for them, fans of firefly know that if Serenity makes enough money in theaters then apparently it will picked up on television again.

But as for me personally I didn't really care.

So imagine my surprise when I stumbled across this review of the movie

http://www.villagevoice.com/film/0539,singer,68229,20.html

Apparently Joss is taking us 500 years into the future with a Big Brother type bad guy and a group of outlaws trying to get a video of truth shown throughout the galaxy that will wake up those in a 1984 haze.

As this review says it is a big fat middle finger to FOX, who canceled Firefly after purposely bungling the order of the episodes and moving around the night that the show aired.

If you watched Buffy and Angel then you already know that Joss thinks that Murdoch is evil, in Angel there were a few nice quips about how Newsmax worked for satan. Just watching the shows gives you an idea of Joss' politics, the first healthy lesbian relationship on TV for starters. Joss also had a nice conference call with fans about how they should vote for Kerry last year.

So even though my heart will forever be broken about Spike and Buffy, I think that maybe I should forgive Whedon. Serenity seems like a good start. I'm now actually looking forward to seeing the movie this weekend, I love dystopia movies. I think that America is in dire need of seeing those stories that warn us of why we really, really don't want to let the fascists take over.

So since I have done nothing but poo poo Joss for the last few years, I felt that since he decided to rock again and make a movie that might mean something, it was my obligation to give credit where credit is due and tell everyone to check out Serenity.

6. Just the reruns. But we can hope, though.
Anything would be better than "Stargate SG-1" these days. (Battlestar Galactica and Firefly have spoiled me for science-fiction)

27. Ironically, the original Galactica suffered similar abuse...
...Constant pre-emptions, that is. Not that it was a s good as Firefly or the new BG, but unreliable scheduling willbe a factor in killing just about any show.

3. I've been posting about this movie also.
It's gotten some good buzz, and the preview audiences here in San Francisco have been selling out.

I heard that after the TV Show got cancelled, the actors held a "We Don't Work for Fox Anymore" party.

9. There used to be a note in the trivia link in IMDB.com
but I can't locate it. I'll see if I can find it. It sure confirmed for me all the sympathetic thoughts I'd had about the talented group that performed in FireFly. It's a shame what television tries to do in programming, sometimes.

5. I hope you like the movie
I am going tomorrow with friends too (I am converting them). I loved the show when it was on FOX and was quite mad when they canceled it. It was a great show. FOX was stupid when they canceled it. Of course FOX being stupid isn't really news.

7. I think that I'll like it, Joss is brilliant.
Plus, come on, a whole movie about a darker Han Solo character what's not to love?

10. Off the top of my head...
I can't think of anything. Not only is the darker Han Solo character cool. But all the other characters are well developed, and they are all very interesting. Personally my favorite is Wash the pilot. I mean the guys plays with toy dinosaurs.

12. Jayne is pretty funny
Adam Baldwin, not related to Alec Baldwin, is hilariously grumpy.

The relationship of the Wash and his wife seemed pretty well written, what I saw of it anyway.

I think that Wash is Joss's stand in, the actor even looks kinda like him.

13. I know he is so funny
Even though his character would betray anybody for the right price it is hard not to like him because Adam Baldwin plays him so well.

The relationship between Wash and Zoe is interesting because she could kill you with her pinky if you pissed her off, and he is one of the characters who never gets to fight much.

15. I just got back...
from seeing Serenity at the local temple of mass consumerism (I do hate malls!). You won't be disappointed. It takes place 6-8 months after Firefly and its kickass, funny, and sad.

18. That's cool! Thanks!
DH and I were supposed to see this movie with our friends and family back east. We were planning on humming the original Firefly theme while waiting to buy tickets (that's how badly geekified we are about Firefly!) :)

17. I'll second that motion!
Joss is a really talented writer and the dialogue he comes up with for his characters is amazing...

I'm really looking forward to this movie, and hope everyone will try to go see it!

Some Of My Favorite Firefly quotes:
Book(a priest) talking to Mal(captain) about his new 'gift wife': If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of Hell, a level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater.

Later that day...
Mal: Oh, I'm gonna go to the special hell.
---
Zoe: You sanguine about the kind of reception we're up to receive on an Alliance ship, Cap?
Mal: Absolutely. What's "sanguine" mean?
Zoe: "Sanguine." Hopeful. Plus, point of interest, it also means "bloody."
Mal: Well, that pretty much covers all the options, don't it?

thrown in for good measure.

If you didn't, DON'T SEE THIS FILM!

It's hard to pick one, but I think I liked War Stories and Out of Gas the best...

But they're all so good! Geez, this is not making me productive! I'm supposed to be studying, but I wanna just go curl up on the couch and watch them now! lol :)

23. I'll be alright, I saw enough of the show not to be totally lost
we're going tomorrow so I don't have time to find a Firefly DVD and watch the first season by then.

I'm sure I'll dig it plenty.

Knowing Joss and now knowing about the bad guys I know I'll like it.

29. Screw that, see the film!
Full impact is desireable, but not necessary. If you can catch the DVDs or Sci-Fi Channel reruns first, by all means do so, but as I understand it you don't need to have seen them to understand the film (and that's only proper, considering the rather low visibility of the show (exacerbated by pre-emptions) when it aired.

Go see the film! Make it successful.

24. In a recent interview with Jewel Staite ( Kaylee )
She said Joss has a Firefly trilogy film deal. However, only if the first movie does well at the box office. Fox allowed Joss to make the films with Universal studios. The downside to this deal is Firefly cannot return as a TV series for 10 years. This deal was made in 2003, so 8 more years to go....If Joss does want to bring it back to television.

back to tv.

But with FOX, who knows? A shadey production deal would not surprise me.

30. I boycott FOX...
...and so never checked out the series. It's been praised so highly, though, that I might gladly buy a used DVD set if I found one.

I'd love to see this movie, too, and it's looking as though FOX had nothing to do with it. Is this true?

I'm wondering whether FOX makes any money off of this. I suspect not--perhaps this is the reason for the title change, FOX owning the Firefly trademark. But could a movie of the series possibly be made without enriching Murdoch?

If FOX never had the movie rights, the answer is yes, I guess, but if Whedon had to buy them back, then maybe the movie is not something I want to support. It's all kind of hazy, and some would say it's not worth worrying about, but I yearn for clarity on this point.

32. While "Blake's 7" did all that 25 years ago, I'm surprised how
anyone would attempt to do another scenario like this. An American one, no less.

"Firefly" utterly rocks.
