How much would it take to get you to move?
Edited on Tue Oct-18-05 06:46 PM by AngryAmish
Someone I know got offered a job for $130,000 plus 10k signing bonus and relocation expenses. Plus lots of room for bonuses and advancement. It is about a 50% bump in salary. However, she won't move because she likes her life here too much.

So, what is your price? Me, I'm not sure because of high cost of moving to another state in my profession.

edited for lots of stuff

1. I moved around a lot,
at first for travel expenses and lodging, then later for more experience and a couple bucks an hour more.

Now, I'm stuck where I'm at due to a 200% retirement contribution matching and silly little grandchildren.

2. How much is the average small cottage within 50 miles of either Seattle,
San Fransisco, Los Angeles, or NYC and enough gas to move my aunt, my cats, and all my stuff? That's how much, precisely, no more, no less.

If she already can pay her bills, is not in debt and is saving, why should she ruin her life if she is happy with it?

If you think money is everything, I feel sorry for you.

I was thinking more of people who work 60 hours a week for that big salary but spend their whole lives at work making someone else rich.

And yes, I do not have any debt except a mortgage and I can save some money with the job I have. However, if I loose it, I do expect to take a paycut in my next job. So I am comfortable financially, but aware that I can loose it still.

30. Oh, I agree with that.
People working 60 hours a week for a big paycheck...I can agree with that. A while back actually I posted about taking on more hours and getting a bit of a raise vs. keeping those hours with my kid.

Sometimes money isn't worth the hassles and losses in other areas. But then, sometimes those losses look better with a nice trip to Cozumel (which I still can't afford, LOL).

If it is a nice destination or a dream job, then it would only take a doubling of my salary. If its a lousy job or lousy destination, it would have to pay me enough so I can retire within a few years.

20. I'd like anywhere for 130K.
Edited on Tue Oct-18-05 08:15 PM by tjdee
In my world, $130K is like hitting the lottery. If I hated it, after a year I'd take what I'd saved from my *130K* salary and move back.

I'd move almost anywhere for even 10-15 grand over what I'm making now, that's how much money matters to me right now. I have bills/credit issues/student loans/etc.

You can tell your friend is already making a good living, to be able to turn that down. Obviously, if you're financially comfortable and expect to stay that way (having enough $$ for bills and whatever leisure things you want), why put yourself through the hassle of living away from your routine/friends/family.

Though, one might want to retire early..... :)

51. More money than that unfortunately.
(Like Powerball levels and then I'd probably just have a home around here and one outside of Philly with a private plane.) My ex-husband and I share custody of our children about as jointly as two people can and live about 2 miles from each other. Legally, I couldn't move with the children and I'm in a degree program that I waited over 2 years to get into, so I'm where I'm at. I'm not emotionally tied particularly to my geography, so in the future and under different life circumstances, I'm more than willing. My profession is very portable and thankfully, I'm with someone who understands the realities of my life currently and despite obstacles, we're making our lives work for both ourselves and our families.

Thank you, Pat. I love you more than anything.

If it were more than a couple hours away, I would want financial help with moving expenses if the job itself did not pay more than say 20% more.
Since we live in a relatively low cost of living area, I would need a raise relative to the cost of living if the job were located in a higher cost of living area.
I'd defintely take your friends job for the move.

I could never, ever live in a city. Anywhere I live has a 2 acre of land minimum. That is an awful good salary, signing bonus, and overall offer. It'd be tough to turn down.
