I’m riding down the road, top’s down, 72 degrees, sun is shining and someone behind me at the four way stop is yelling my name and trying to get my attention, don’t know who it is, but this little twenty something is yelling “Fuck you Melanie, you goddamned bitch” and showing me her middle finger.

And I’m thinking I don’t know this person, I have no idea who it is, or why they hate me, or how they know my name, but in this town if one person doesn’t like you for some reason, they point you out to all their little friends and then you get flipped off, cursed at, cut off in traffic, and you have to check to see the latest keying your car got and this goes on for years and years, especially if they're tweakers.

So either it was my silver, mustang convertible they hated, (my car) The DU bumper sticker, (my politics) the LSU Mardi Gras beads (or my sports team) or maybe I just I looked like a goddamned bitch this morning. I don’t know. I haven't done anything to anybody.

All I know is this person thought that I should fuck myself or her (that wasn’t clear) she knew at least one phrase in sign language and she hates me.

I might get my feelings hurt if I even knew who it was.

I live in the zipper beneath the bible belt, Hot Springs, Arkansas. Home of Oaklawn, ponies, whores, preachers, and hopefully (soon) slots. I don't vote republican or belong to the KKK, I don't own a gun or hunt, and I don't go to church, or gamble, or drink beer, and I don't do tweak, in other words I don't fit in around here.
