A $1.99 package of half a dozen of those rubber-band thingies women use to make ponytails.

Cool, huh?

And when she asks why I gave her those for a Christmas present, I'll tell her, "Well, you'll need to tie your hair up when you're using this," and open the door to the next room so she can see her new Trek bicycle.

Am I bad, or what?

5. It's going to be almost as much fun as when I gave her a car for

her birthday three years ago. That was a doozy.

6. How'd you pull that off?

Billy Pilgrim did a great one in "Slaughterhouse Five." He woke up his wife on her birthday by handing her a big yellow bow with a yellow ribbon attached to it and said "Follow the yellow brick road." The ribbon went all the way downstairs and out the front door, where it was tied to a new Cadillac.

7. I just brought it home while she was upstairs in the shower.

I went upstairs and told her I'd just brought her birthday present home and that she should come downstairs to see it.

She said, "Well, why can't you just bring it up here?"

I told her it wouldn't fit up the stairs, and that REALLY piqued her curiosity, so she came down; when I showed it to her through the window, it honestly took her the better part of a mintue to absorb what she was seeing.

(It was an Accura RSX. She had been pissing and moaning about approaching 50, so I figured a sports car would make her feel younger...)

AND - I'm glad to hear that Trek is still in business. After I moved to NYC, I got out of touch with the biking world, and had been wondering if Trek was still around.

I have a 20 year old Raleigh, which is still an amazing bike, but someday would also like to get a Trek.

Best bike I've ever owned.

Mine's a Raleigh Portage, bought in, I believe 1985. Though as I think about it, it was probably 1986, so I did, in fact, lie about it being 20 years old.

Fucking AWESOME bike, that I've never had a problem with. Not AT ALL.

11. I just bought my third Trek

I'm officially a rich man again, because I own two bikes. My first Trek was made in Korea. My last two were made in China, and they all were around $300.

Shit, even in 1985, I don't think one could find a Trek as cheap as $300. That's why I went Raleigh, because I could get one for $350. Treks were like $1500.

and your wife is one lucky woman. Hubby pulled a similar trick on me tonight. My gift was a huge fake "diamond" ring. The real gift is a combo gift for Christmas, my birthday and our 20th anniversary which is early next spring. Hubby wanted me to have something under the tree, but knew I would want to be involved in making the decision.
