I spent the evening futzing with my computers and my palmtop and having a lovely twosome time with my husband. So much better for me than something that really seems to be no more than ritualized warfare.....

36. What game?
I never have had an interest in sports, unless you count the occasional womens' ice skating and gymnastics that I watch. My roomie watches football and baseball regularly, and I always find something else to do when she's parked in front of the tv, screaming and cursing. Fortunately my friend Mike dislikes sports as much as I do, so I never have to worry about encountering them when we're together.

42. Since I'm with sympathetic souls, here's my sports rant....
Why do fans think the team they are rooting for actually has anything to do with their hometown or them? Professional athletes are MERCENARIES! Winning is about which owners are willing to spend the most money to get the best mercenaries. Now, if players were required to be natives of whatever town, state or region they are representing, that could have some relevance.

And what about the "World Series?" I haven't noticed any baseball teams from Berlin, Calcutta, Singapore or the Ivory Coast competing in that.

And what's with all the homophobes who enjoy seeing men run around in skin-tight pants, tackling each other and slapping each other's butts?

I suppose the whole thing is relatively harmless, unless your team wins big and the fans riot in celebration.

46. Yeah, girl!! Testify!!
Good rant! YOu raise some really excellent points about the mercenary aspect to professional athletes.

I suspect that one of the reasons people are so attracted to the spectator sports thang is because they enjoy the feelings of comraderie that are generated by the whole "team" experience. Maybe, for a lot of them, that's the ONLY experience they have in their lives of feeling connected to something bigger than themselves. Hey, whatever, right? Who am I to judge? To each, their own, I say. :eyes: It can definitely get out of hand, though, as in rioting.

In any case, I'm glad to know I'm not alone in my opinion. See? We all just want to feel connected. THAT'S what it's all about....

Hmmmm.....
