Today, my wife Jeanette went out to Fry's to buy some new parts for our computer. Before deciding that she should go down there (by bus) we checked out their website (www.outpost.com) and compared the prices there to what was available from online vendors (www.pricewatch.com). We discovered that for not too much more money we could buy everything locally and not have to wait a week to get everything. For the curious, we're buying 2 gigs of ram, a pair of 300gb hard drives, and a DVD burner. These will be the final upgrades we make to what is becoming a dated system, and our next purchase will be a newer second computer, when and if we ever have enough money.
Anyway, not long ago the phone rang. It's Jeanette, explaining to me that even though Fry's offers price matching, they won't price match their own website! They wanted $50 more for each hard drive and $70 more for the exact same memory in the store. After I inserted my eyes back into my own head, I told her that she should ask to speak to the store manager and let him/her know that if they weren't going to honor their online prices that we would go through Newegg and risk the inconvenience of return shipping, and we would NEVER shop at Fry's again. They agreed to honor their website price, but still tacked on the ground shipping charge in addition to sales tax (about $9 more). We went ahead and decided to do it on their terms, but I'm still kinda shaking my head over the whole thing, and I'm not thrilled with it. :(
Just a heads up for any of you who have Fry's stores where you live, to be careful when shopping there....
