17. it may interest you to know
that right before the infamous potato "famine", the average Irishman ate between 11 and 14 lbs of potatos a day, iirc. The Irish at the time were one of the healthiest, most robust people in Europe, despite their abject poverty. The potato is the only food that will supply all the necessary nutrients to sustain life if that is one's sole diet.

In most "famines", there are many precursors to the event in terms of disease, crop failings, etc...none of these were present in Ireland in 1845. And, in a real "famine", thousands of ships laden with grain, meat, and other foodstuffs would not sail from that country under armed guard to feed the other peoples of Europe.

From raw to the most elaborate recipe, if the potato is the main ingredient, I like it!

3. I like mine
baked, fried, raw, cooked in aluminum foil with onion and butter, mashed and almost every way then can be cooked. BUT I hate them boiled, there's not enough butter, salt and pepper to make boiled potatoes edible for me.

13. Peel an onion, and throw it in whole for taste, add salt
toss the onion out afterwards. Trust me, those potatoes will taste good. You eat mashed, mashed are just boiled potatoes mashes with butter and milk added.

I'm Irish, potatoes are a staple, cooked with nearly every meal. My mom use to make mashed potatoes to serve alongside spaghetti!! I don't do that, but occasionally, I think about doing it for old times sake.

I ordered a "vegetarian" meal at a restaurant in Ireland and was served plain rice, plain boiled potatoes and plain spaghetti.

4. Well....
If they're boiled with corn on the cob, crawfish and andouille sausage--and the appropriate spices--then, yes, I LOVE boiled potatoes!

5. I love them boiled!
I used to hate them that way, I loved mashed, but I've very much grown fond of boiled, smallish potatos, boiled whole.

Then serve with salt, pepper, and butter.

Or garlic butter. Or any host of 12,000 spices and herbs, really.

10. Umm... any way is great....
Boiled, baked, fried, mashed, twice-baked, au gratin, makes no difference. Maybe it's the Irish influence, but my kid's email address starts with "spuds." Whether it's a potato gene or a potato jones, who cares? Dig in!

God this part Irish mutt if he was in the emerald isle when the famine struck he would have been starved because his beloved potatoes were gone. Ok how do I like my potatoes, I like em fried, mashed, and I think I have had em boiled before and thats pretty good too. Baked is good too. Oh I wish I could have some mashed/fried potatoes and pork chops and apple sauce *drools* and *wants to call grandma*

24. I like rice better
and I don't like boiled potatoes. They seem bland to me. I do like roasted garlic mashed potatoes and I love taking a baked potato and cutting it up and cooking it with onions and chopped bell peppers in bacon grease, that's my version of hash browns. My favorite potato recipe is this for scalloped potatoes (from www.epicurious.com):

OLD-FASHIONED SCALLOPED POTATOES

2 cups thinly sliced onion
9 tablespoons unsalted butter
6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3 1/2 cups milk
2 1/2 pounds boiling potatoes
1 1/2 cups coarsely grated sharp Cheddar (about 6 ounces)
1/3 cup dry bread crumbs

In a skillet cook the onion and 2 tablespoons of the butter over moderately low heat, stirring, until it is very soft. In a heavy saucepan melt 6 tablespoons of the remaining butter over moderately low heat, whisk in the flour, and cook the roux, whisking, for 3 minutes. Add the milk, scalded, in a stream, whisking, and bring the sauce to a boil. Simmer the sauce, whisking, for 1 minute and add salt and pepper to taste. Peel the potatoes and slice them 1/8 inch thick. Spread about one third of the sauce in the bottom of a well-buttered 3-quart gratin dish at least 2 1/2 inches deep, cover it with a layer of potato slices, overlapping the slices slightly, and cover the potatoes with one third of the onions. Sprinkle the onions with one third of the Cheddar and continue to layer the remaining sauce, potatoes, onions, and Cheddar in the same manner. Sprinkle the top with bread crumbs, dot it with the remaining 1 tablespoon butter, cut into bits, and bake the mixture, covered with foil, in the middle of a preheated 400°F. oven for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake the potato mixture for 30 to 35 minutes more, or until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender.

Serves 6 to 8.
