some songs speak way better than words..name one that speaks for you
heres one redone by cake

Sad songs and waltzes..

I’m writing a song all about you.
A true song as real as my tears.
But you’ve no need to fear it
Cause no one will hear it.
Sad songs and waltzes aren’t selling this year.

I’ll tell all about how you cheated.
I’d like for the whole world to hear.
I’d like to get even
With you cause you’re leavin’.
But sad songs and waltzes aren’t selling this year.

It’s a good thing that I’m not a star.
You don’t know how lucky you are.
Though my record may say it,
No one will play it.
Sad songs and waltzes aren’t selling this year.

It’s a good thing that I’m not a star.
You don’t know how lucky you are.

1. A song that speaks for me is
"Good Morning, Starshine" from Hair....but I don't know the lyrics.

I do know that whenever I hear it, I get all goosebumps and I feel soooo happy.....

2. Busting Up A Starbucks - M. Doughty
Edited on Mon Feb-06-06 11:09 PM by rucky
It will always be
The end of time
The end of law
The end of life
The dogs will howl
And yank the leash
From tree to tree
From each to each

Does the man who makes the shoes own you, clown?
You can’t even pry the nameplate off, now can you?
Fix it with your tiny fist there
James Van Der Beek and them sisters from Sister, Sister
The only one that’s ever felt this is you
The force that’s forcing you
To feel like busting up a Starbucks.

This bitter drink
Has made you drunk
The thoughts you think
Become unthunk
The sea’s ablaze
The sky is too
The water’s red
And the flames are blue

Nyack! Ronkonkoma! East Orange! Piscataway!

3. "No Class" by Motorhead
It's my theme song. When they make a movie of my life, this is the music that will play in the background every moment I'm on screen:

Shut up, you talk too loud,
You don't fit in with the crowd,
I can't believe you exist,
I've crossed you right off my list,
Too much, too soon, you're way out of tune,
No Class

Way out, you're way out of line,
No buddy I can't spare a dime,
Fade out, baby that's right,
No bark and even less bite,
Your perfect smile, betrays your lack of style,
No Class

Too late, you can't catch up now,
You face the wrong way anyhow,
I know you ain't got the brain,
To come in out of the rain,
Too bad, no magic, I'm afraid you're really tragic,
No Class

4. King without a Crown
"Strip away the layers and reveal your soul
Got to give yourself up and then you become whole
You're a slave to yourself and you don't even know
You want to live the fast life but your brain moves slow
If you're trying to stay high then you're bound to stay low
You want God but you can't deflate your ego
If you're already there then there's nowhere to go
If you're cup's already full then its bound to overflow
If you're drowning in the water's and you can't stay afloat
Ask Hashem for mercy and he'll throw you a rope
You're looking for help from God you say he couldn't be found
Looking up to the sky and searchin' beneath the ground
Like a King without his Crown"

5. Jim Croce illustrates this point perfectly...
Well, I know it's kind of late
I hope I didn't wake you
But what I got to say can't wait I know you'd understand
Ev'ry time I tried to tell you
The words just came out wrong
So I'll have to say I love you in a song

Yeah, I know it's kind of strange
But ev'ry time I'm near you
I just run out of things to say
I know you'd understand
Ev'ry time I tried to tell you
The words just came out wrong
So I'll have to say I love you in a song

Ev'ry time the time was right
All the words just came out wrong
So I'll have to say I love you in a song

Yeah, I know it's kind of late
I hope I didn't wake you
But there's something that I just got to say
I know you'd understand
Ev'ry time I tried to tell you
The words just came out wrong
So I'll have to say I love you in a so

27. if you judge cake by what is played on the radio
then you have misjudged them.
Beauty is in the eye or ear of the beholder.
What groups do you like?
I used to love heavy metal But i grew up and realized most of it was noize requiring little talent to pump to the eager masses.
Now i will admit one thing the distance sucks.
but they have a lot of great music..maybe you should look before you leap.
well anyway we can agree to disagree,,but you are wrong :)

8. Song about my favorite city, NOLA
In the heart of the night
In the cool southern rain
There’s a full moon in sight
Shinin’ down on Lake Pontchartrain
And the river she rises
Just like she used to do
She’s so full of surprises
She reminds me of you

In the heart of the night
In the heart of the ni-ey-ight
In the heart on the night
WoWo, down in New Orleans

There’s a nightbird singing
Right on through till the dawn
And the streets are still ringing
With people carrying on
It’s been so long waiting
Just to be here again
Anticipating
All the time I can spend

In the heart of the night
In the heart of the ni-ey-ight
In the heart of the night
Wo-WO-wo, Down in New Orleans

And when you kill a man, you're a murderer
Kill many, and you're a conqueror
Kill them all...Ooh...Oh you're a god!

14. Heart Cooks Brain
Its land mine
Its coal mine
Its a bad thought

On the way to god don't know
my brain's the burger and my heart's the coal
I'm trying to get my head clear
I push things out through my mouth I get refilled through my
ears
I'm on my way to god don't know or even care
my brain's the weak heart
and my heart's the long stairs
Inland from Vancouvers shores
the ravens and the seagulls push each other
inward and outward
inward and outward

in this place that i call home
my brain's the cliff
and my heart's the bitter buffalo
we tore one down, and erected another there
the match of the century
absence versus thin air

on the way to god don't know
my brains the burger and
my hearts the coal
In this life that we call home
the years go fast and
the days go so slow
the days go slow

16. I want this one played at my memorial service: "Hands" by Jewel
"Hands"

If I could tell the world just one thing
It would be that we're all OK
And not to worry 'cause worry is wasteful
And useless in times like these
I won't be made useless
I won't be idle with despair
I will gather myself around my faith
For light does the darkness most fear
My hands are small, I know
But they're not yours, they are my own
But they're not yours, they are my own
And I am never broken
Poverty stole your golden shoes
It didn't steal your laughter
And heartache came to visit me
But I knew it wasn't ever after
We'll fight, not out of spite
For someone must stand up for what's right
'Cause where there's a man who has no voice
There ours shall go singing
My hands are small I know
But they're not yours, they are my own
But they're not yours, they are my own
I am never broken
In the end only kindness matters
In the end only kindness matters
I will get down on my knees, and I will pray
I will get down on my knees, and I will pray
I will get down on my knees, and I will pray
My hands are small I know
But they're not yours, they are my own
But they're not yours, they are my own
And I am never broken
My hands are small I know
But they're not yours, they are my own
But they're not yours, they are my own
And I am never broken
We are never broken
We are God's eyes
God's hands
God's mind
We are God's eyes
God's hands
God's heart
We are God's eyes
God's hands
God's eyes
We are God's hands
We are God's hands

17. I completely grokked "Girl Anachronism" by The Dresden Dolls
when I first heard it. Aside from the fact I'm a bloke, it captures a very complex state of mind & being and expresses it brilliantly. The lyrics are excellent, but it really needs to be heard:

MP3 -> http://media.dresdendolls.com/downloads/GirlAnachronism.mp3
Video -> http://www.roadrun.com/shared/downloads/DresdenDolls/DD-GA_300k.mov

you can tell
from the scars on my arms
and cracks in my hips
and the dents in my car
and the blisters on my lips
that i'm not the carefullest of girls

you can tell
from the glass on the floor
and the strings that're breaking
and i keep on breaking more
and it looks like i am shaking
but it's just the temperature
and then again
if it were any colder i could disengage
if i were any older i could act my age
but i dont think that youd believe me
it's
not
the
way
i'm
meant
to
be
it's just the way the operation made me

and you can tell
from the state of my room
that they let me out too soon
and the pills that i ate
came a couple years too late
and ive got some issues to work through
there i go again
pretending to be you
make-believing
that i have a soul beneath the surface
trying to convince you
it was accidentally on purpose

i am not so serious
this passion is a plagiarism
i might join your century
but only on a rare occasion
i was taken out
before the labor pains set in and now
behold the world's worst accident
i am the girl anachronism

and you can tell
by the red in my eyes
and the bruises on my thighs
and the knots in my hair
and the bathtub full of flies
that i'm not right now at all
there i go again
pretending that i'll fall
don't call the doctors
cause they've seen it all before
they'll say just
let
her
crash
and
burn
she'll learn
the attention just encourages her

and you can tell
from the full-body cast
that i'm sorry that i asked
though you did everything you could
(like any decent person would)
but i might be catching so don't touch
you'll start believeing youre immune to gravity and stuff
don't get me wet
because the bandages will all come off

and you can tell
from the smoke at the stake
that the current state is critical
well it is the little things, for instance:
in the time it takes to break it she can make up ten excuses:
please excuse her for the day, its just the way the medication makes her...

i dont necessarily believe there is a cure for this
so i might join your century but only as a doubtful guest
i was too precarious removed as a caesarian
behold the worlds worst accident
I AM THE GIRL ANACHRONISM

18. Me and Bobby McGee
As a wanderer and a free spirit, it's always spoken to me of the open road and the combination of joy and lonliness that you find there.

Busted flat in Baton Rouge, waiting for a train
And I's feeling nearly as faded as my jeans
Bobby thumbed a diesel down, just before it rained
That rode us all the way to New Orleans

I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana
I was playing soft while Bobby sang the blues
Windshield wipers slappin' time
I was holding Bobby's hand in mine
And we sang every song that driver knew

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose
Nothing don't mean nothing honey, if it ain't free
Feeling good was easy, Lord, when he sang the blues
You know, feeling good was good enough for me
Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee

From the Kentucky coal mines, to the California sun
Yeah, Bobby shared the secrets of my soul
Through all kinds of weather through everything we done
Yeah Bobby, baby, kept me from the cold

One day near Salinas, Lord, I let him slip away
He's looking for that home, and I hope he finds it
But I'd trade all of my tomorrows for one single yesterday
To be holding Bobby's body next to mine

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose
Nothing, and that's all that Bobby left me
Feeling good was easy, Lord, when he sang the blues
Hey, feeling good was good enough for me
Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee

20. "Once Before I Go"
Once before I go
I want you to know
That I would do it all again
I'm sure I'd make the same mistakes
But I could make it through
The pains and joys and aches
I knew back then
I'd do it all
I'd do it all again

Before I go
I want you to know
That I look back with no regrets
And when our luck was wearing thin
And we were down and out
And still came back to win against all bets
Now when I look back
I still have no regrets

And it's so hard to say good-byes
When there's so much that's left
Unspoken in your eyes
But unless I spread my wings again
I'm afraid I'll never soar
So hang on to the memories
And hold me close once more

Once more
Just once before I go
I want you to know
That I have loved you all along
And even when we're far apart
I only need to feel you're living in my heart
And I'll be strong
Love you just the way
I've loved you all along

And it's so hard to say good-byes
When there's so much that's left
Unspoken in your eyes
But unless I spread my wings again
I'm afraid I'll never soar
So kiss me for the last time
And hold me close once more

Once more
Just once before I go
I want you to know
That I have loved you all along
And even when we're far apart
I only need to feel you're living in my heart
And I'll be strong

You are the light that shines on me
You always were and you'll always be
So I had to let you know
Just this once
Just this once
Before I go

21. I kicked around some reminiscences that I shouldn't have yesterday,
and I've had this one on my mind ever since.

show me, show me, show me
how you do that trick
"the one that makes me scream" she said
"the one that makes me laugh" she said
and threw her arms around my neck
show me how you do it,
and i promise you, i promise that
i'll run away with you
i'll run away with you

were spinning on that dizzy edge
i kiss your face and kiss your head
i dreamed of all the different ways
i had to let her go
scream "why are you so far away?" she said
won't you ever know
that i'm in love with you,
that i'm in love with you

you
soft and lonely
you
lost and only
you
strange as angels
dancing in the deepest oceans
exsisting in the world
you're just like a dream
you're just like a dream

well daylight whipped me into shape
i must have been asleep for days
and moving lips could breathe her name
i opened up my eyes
and found myself alone, alone
alone upon a raging sea
that stole the only girl i loved
and drowned her deep inside of me

you
lost and lonely
you
soft and only
you
just like heaven

22. Ellis Paul's "Last Call"
Last Call

from Stories

You said, "Don't wait up, don't count the minutes."
So here I am watching paint fade from the walls.
On the TV, planes are dancing to the national anthem,
So the whole world knows it's long past last call.
I sat through Tarzan swinging through the jungle,
And Godzilla crushing buildings and all.
The light from this TV can make it all look so easy.
It makes this room feel incredibly small.

Last call, last call.
Now I've heard it all.
The excuses get weaker as the stories get tall.
You step off with the wrong foot, the drunk fool at the ball.
Well, I'm not up for dancing.
I'm up past last call.

Clock keeps on talkin'.
It says, "Fool go to bed --
Why waste the words, they've already been said."
But I can't shut my eyes with this face in my head,
So tonight I plan on clearing my mind.

I could lay my head in the arms of the sofa,
And wait for headlights to roll across these walls.
But when your key finds the door, your feet find the floor,
They'll be greeted by empty rooms and empty halls.

When you don't wanna wake up
Everything is fucked
Everybody sux
You don't really know why

Rippin' someone's head off
No human contact
And if you interact
Your life is on contract
Your best bet is to stay away motherfucker
It's just one of those days!!

Its all about the he says she says bullshit
I think you better quit
Lettin' shit slip
Or you'll be leavin with a fat lip
Its all about the he says she says bullshit
I think you better quit talkin that shit
(Punk, so come and get it)
Its just one of those days
Feelin' like a freight train
First one to complain
Leaves with a blood stain
Damn right I'm a maniac

Cuz I'm fuckin' up your program
And if your stuck up

Your best bet is to stay away motherfucker

My suggestion is to keep your distance cuz right now im dangerous
We've all felt like shit
And been treated like shit
All those motherfuckers that want to step up

And if my day keeps goin' this way I just might break somethin' tonight...
I hope you know I pack a chain saw
I'll skin your ass raw
And if my day keeps goin' this way I just might break somethin' tonight...
I hope you know I pack a chain saw
I'll skin your ass raw
And if my day keeps goin' this way I just might break your fuckin' face tonight!!
Give me somethin' to break
How bout your fuckin' face
I hope you know I pack a chain saw, what!!...

I don't remember the title but the words always stuck in my head

Red sun rising
In the sky
Sleeping village
Cockles cry
Soft breeze blowing
In the trees
Peace of mind
Feel at ease

25. Metallica ~ Holier Than Thou
No more!

The craps rolls out your mouth again
Haven’t changed, your brain is still gelatin
Little whispers circle around your head
Why don’t you worry about yourself instead

Who are you? where ya been? where ya from?
Gossip is burning on the tip of your tongue
You lie so much you believe yourself
Judge not lest ye be judged yourself

Holier than thou
You are
Holier than thou
You are

You know not

Before you judge me take a look at you
Can’t you find somethig better to do
Point the finger, slow to understand
Arrogance and ignorance go hand in hand

It’s not who you are it’s who you know
Others lives are the basis of your own
Burn your bridges build them back with wealth
Judge not lest ye be judged yourself

Holier than thou
You are
Holier than thou
You are

You know not

26. "Hero" by Mariah Carey
Kind of corny I know but when I was in the midst of a severe depression I happened to hear this song on the radio and it addressed a lot of what I was feeling. Especially the lyrics: "there is an answer if you look into your soul, and the sorrow that you know will melt away."

And lately I've heard Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind" ten thousand times and been on a bit of a kick with it, but I wouldn't say it speaks for me... And I'm always adoring Steely Dan's "Deacon Blues"...

"Azure"--Duke Ellington/Ella Fitzgerald

Drifting, dreaming
In an azure mood
Stardust gleaming
Through my solitude

Here in my seclusion
You're a blue illusion
While I'm in this azure interlude
I'm not wanted
I'm so all alone

Always haunted
By the dreams I own
But though I'm tormented
I must be contented

Drifting, dreaming
In an azure mood

Drifting, dreaming
In an azure mood

Drifting, dreaming
In an azure mood

"If You Could Read My Mind"--Gordon Lightfoot

If you could read my mind love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
’bout a ghost from a wishin’ well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
You know that ghost is me
And I will never be set free
As long as I’m a ghost that you can’t see

If I could read your mind love
What a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like a paperback novel
The kind that drugstores sell
When you reach the part where the heartaches come
The hero would be me
But heroes often fail
And you won’t read that book again
Because the ending’s just too hard to take

I’d walk away like a movie star
Who gets burned in a three way script
Enter number two
A movie queen to play the scene
Of bringing all the good things out in me
But for now love, let’s be real
I never thought I could act this way
And I’ve got to say that I just don’t get it
I don’t know where we went wrong
But the feelin’s gone
And I just can’t get it back

If you could read my mind love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
’bout a ghost from a wishin’ well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
But stories always end

And if you read between the lines
You’ll know that I’m just tryin’ to understand
The feelin’s that you lack
I never thought I could feel this way
And I’ve got to say that I just to get it
I don’t know where we went wrong
But the feelin’s gone
And I just can’t get it back

"Deacon Blues"-- Steely Dan

This is the day
Of the expanding man
That shape is my shade
There where I used to stand
It seems like only yesterday
I gazed through the glass
At ramblers
Wild gamblers
That’s all in the past

You call me a fool
You say it’s a crazy scheme
This one’s for real
I already bought the dream
So useless to ask me why
Throw a kiss and say goodbye
I’ll make it this time
I’m ready to cross that fine line

Chorus:
I’ll learn to work the saxophone
I’ll play just what I feel
Drink scotch whisky all night long
And die behind the wheel
They got a name for the winners in the world
I want a name when I lose
They call alabama the crimson tide
Call me deacon blues

My back to the wall
A victim of laughing chance
This is for me
The essence of true romance
Sharing the things we know and love
With those of my kind
Libations
Sensations
That stagger the mind

I crawl like a viper
Through these suburban streets
Make love to these women
Languid and bittersweet
I’ll rise when the sun goes down
Cover every game in town
A world of my own
I’ll make it my home sweet home

Chorus

This is the night
Of the expanding the man
I take one last drag
As I approach the stand
I cried when I wrote this song
Sue me if I play too long
This brother is free
I’ll be what I want to be

Chorus

On Edit: I forgot Steely Dan originally...

31. At the moment, this gem by Tom Waits:
The piano has been drinking
my necktie is asleep
and the combo went back to New York
the jukebox has to take a leak
and the carpet needs a haircut
and the spotlight looks like a prison break
cause the telephone's out of cigarettes
and the balcony's on the make
and the piano has been drinking
the piano has been drinking...

and the menus are all freezing
and the lightman's blind in one eye
and he can't see out of the other
and the piano-tuner's got a hearing aid
and he showed up with his mother
and the piano has been drinking
the piano has been drinking

cause the bouncer is a Sumo wrestler
cream puff casper milk toast
and the owner is a mental midget
with the I.Q. of a fencepost
cause the piano has been drinking
the piano has been drinking...

and you can't find your waitress
with a Geiger counter
And she hates you and your friends
and you just can't get served
without her
and the box-office is drooling
and the bar stools are on fire
and the newspapers were fooling
and the ash-trays have retired
the piano has been drinking
the piano has been drinking
The piano has been drinking
not me, not me, not me, not me, not me

32. masquerade
Edited on Wed Feb-08-06 04:23 AM by necso
the painted faces on the street
caricatures of long ago
oh they were young and oh so sweet
down beyond the boulevard
knock on doors and empty halls
and still sometimes remember
the masquerade's forever

when you see the price they paid
i'm sure you'll come and join the masquerade

the reeling figures pass on by
like ghosts in some forgotten play
beneath the black and empty sky
music plays and figures dance
with partners chosen... by chance
and still sometimes remember
the masquerade's forever

they reached for tomorrow
but tomorrow's more of the same
and so they reached for tomorrow
but tomorrow never came

when you hear the price they paid
i'm sure you'll come and join the masquerade
when you hear the price they paid
to come, join in the masquerade

one by one and two by two
past eight by tens in shattered frames
the players try to leave the room
frantic puppets on a string
and all the while the music sings
and still sometimes remember
the masquerade's forever

....

Oops.

33. Rush: Closer to the Heart
And the men who hold high places
Must be the ones who start
To mold a new reality
Closer to the heart
Closer to the heart
The blacksmith and the artist
Reflect it in their art
They forge their creativity
Closer to the heart
Closer to the heart

Philosophers and ploughmen
Each must know his part
To sow a new mentality
Closer to the heart
Closer to the heart
You can be the captain
I will draw the chart
Sailing into destiny
Closer to the heart
