Poll question: Favorite Grateful Dead Tune
For me it's Bertha...all time fav....obviously tough to do with only ten choices but I just thought it would be good to drive the Deadheads out of the woodwork. :D

You know, when they're not playing and there isn't any sound? ;-)

43. Jimmie Dale Gilmore
He did a great cover of "Ripple" about 3 years ago, and Lyle Lovett did a fine job with "Friend of the Devil" on a tribute album.

Another great Dead cover is Warren Zevon and David Lindley doing "Casey Jones". :D

13. Couldn't vote ...
Because my ABSOLUTE, ALL TIME FAVORITE, "Throwing Stones," isn't listed! Perfect, as it relates to current events, IMO:

"Heartless powers try to tell us what to think
If the spirit's sleeping then the flesh is ink
History's page will be neatly carved in stone
The future's here, we are it, we are on our own
On our own, on our own, we're on our own

If the game is lost, then we're all the same
No one left or place to take the blame
We will leave this place an empty stone
Or that shining ball of blue we call our home

So the kids, they dance, they shake their bones
And the politicians throwing stones
Singing ashes, ashes, all fall down
Ashes, ashes, all fall down

Shipping powders back and forth
Singing black goes south while white goes north
And the whole world full of petty wars
Singing I got mine and you got yours
While the current fashions set the pace
Lose your step, fall out of grace
The radical, he rant and rave
Singing someone got to turn the page
And the rich man in his summer home
Singing just leave well enough alone
But his pants are down, his cover blown
And the politicians throwing stones
So the kids, they dance, they shake their bones
'Cause it's all too clear we're on our own
Singing ashes, ashes, all fall down
Ashes, ashes, all fall down"

17. Neil has current events pegged in his latest CD...
Neil Young: Leave the Driving (from the Greendale CD)

an excerpt:

Camoulflage hung in his closet
Guns all over the walls
Plans for buildings and engineers
And a book with no numbers at all

Meanwhile across the ocean
Living in the internet
Is the cause of an explosion
No one has heard yet

But there's no need to worry
There's no reason to fuss
Just go on about your work now
And leave the driving to us

And we'll be watching you
No matter what you do
And you can do your part
By watching others too

36. Got a soft spot for St. Stephen
Summer of 68 was my first Dead concert. College field house on a hot night in St.Louis. We came in the back door just as they were starting into St. Stephen. Jerry looked liked a big lumber jack, I could not believe how sweet his voice was. The band was tight that night and the crowd responded in kind. A good time was had by all. :)

30. Truckin’, said everything that needed to be said about the times.
Edited on Sun Nov-30-03 10:30 PM by The Lone Liberal
Truckin’ got my chips cashed in. keep truckin’, like the do-dah man
Together, more or less in line, just keep truckin’ on.

Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on main street.
Chicago, new york, detroit and it’s all on the same street.
Your typical city involved in a typical daydream
Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings.

Dallas, got a soft machine; houston, too close to new orleans;
New york’s got the ways and means; but just won’t let you be, oh no.

Most of the cast that you meet on the streets speak of true love,
Most of the time they’re sittin’ and cryin’ at home.
One of these days they know they better get goin’
Out of the door and down on the streets all alone.

Truckin’, like the do-dah man. once told me "you’ve got to play your hand"
Sometimes your cards ain’t worth a dime, if you don’t lay’em down,

Sometimes the light’s all shinin’ on me;
Other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me what a long, strange trip it’s been.

What in the world ever became of sweet jane?
She lost her sparkle, you know she isn’t the same
Livin’ on reds, vitamin c, and cocaine,
All a friend can say is "ain’t it a shame? "

Truckin’, up to buffalo. been thinkin’, you got to mellow slow
Takes time, you pick a place to go, and just keep truckin’ on.

Sittin’ and starin’ out of the hotel window.
Got a tip they’re gonna kick the door in again
I’d like to get some sleep before I travel,
But if you got a warrant, I guess you’re gonna come in.

Busted, down on bourbon street, set up, like a bowlin’ pin.
Knocked down, it get’s to wearin’ thin. they just won’t let you be, oh no.

You’re sick of hangin’ around and you’d like to travel;
Get tired of travelin’ and you want to settle down.
I guess they can’t revoke your soul for tryin’,
Get out of the door and light out and look all around.

Sometimes the light’s all shinin’ on me;
Other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me what a long, strange trip it’s been.

Truckin’, I’m a goin’ home. whoa whoa baby, back where I belong,
Back home, sit down and patch my bones, and get back truckin’ on.
Hey now get back truckin’ home.

...but would probably rank it in a tie with "Mountains of the Moon," with (of course!) "Ripple" and "Box of Rain" close behind.
