My wife just found out she is black
It make no difference to me, but it does clear up some questions about her relatives, especially one very beautiful sultry, dark skinned niece. It sure makes sense.

Not many in the family know it, not even the niece.

If it was OK for her to know I am a Pollack, it's OK if she is black.

19. I think I am part melungeon. I've been doing some research and
it sure looks like it. My family came from Claiborne county tennessee with the surname of Mullins. My father's family is dark skinned with blue eyes.

3. Years ago
my fiancee and I attended a Christmas party with the extended family, all hard corps Irish Catholics. There were maybe thirty-five people of all ages there, and one little Puerto Rican girl who was anxious to please but feeling very, very out of place.

Still, she was game, and thought it was important that my family like her before she and I married. Everything went well, as things tend to do at Irish partys as long as the booze flows, until after we left.

Then my aunt, the matriarch of the whole clan, cornered my brother and looked him straight in the eye, and with a stern, uncompromising expression on her face, broke it down for him.

"She isn't a Catholic, is she?"

Well, no. She was a Baptist, a minority among Puerto Ricans, but I almost choked on my beer when my brother reported this to me. None of my family gave a rat's ass if she was a 'rican or black or chinese. All that mattered was that she be Catholic.

There were 100+ people at the wedding reception, almost equally divided among her family and mine, and it was one of the most truly enjoyable events either family had been to, according to later polls.

Race is important to a lot of people, but I never could figure out why.

I wish you and your wife well.

(unless she isn't Catholic, of course ;^) )

7. My brother married a Southern Baptist
I love my brother & his wife...but I have to admit it's weird haveing a Baptist in the family.

Before my brothers marriage I had never been in a Baptist Church before. My relatives from South America didn't know why they had a hot-tub behind the alter.

Being Catholic is more than a religion, it's a quazi-ethnic group. (Think Jew-lite)

I'm not a very good Catholic, but I love the Church. I get pissed when people diss the Church.

It's about a catholic priest in New Mexico...he stood up to some military guys doing drills in front of his house because they wanted to get back at him for rallying for peace... http://www.commondreams.org/views03/1129-07.htm

6. Her mom told her.
A few years back her mom let on that she is Jewish on her side of the family.

Her father's side of the family came to the US from France, through the Bahamas, to Louisiana. You can figure it out from there.

Most don't know that they are also from German Jew background.

We have some olive skin in our family, possibly from our mideast lineage. It really shows on my sister. When traveling down south we'd have a hard time getting service at some restaurants because my sister didn't look Aryan.

I have knowingly crossed the line on many occasions, this time I didn't it unknowingly.
I don't care what race or whatever, I love her just the way she is.

25. Race is easier to type than regional adaptation.
What we call race is just adaptation to the region. Too bad it has been misunderstood and abused.

Nothing has change at home with the news, other than sending our genealogy search in a new direction.

23. ever see the movie 'Pinkie'?
it's a 50's era movie starring...i think Lana Turner maybe: anyway, it's a fabulous movie. This white girl goes home to see her granma...her boyfriend follows her (?) and finds out the girl 'Pinkie' she's called,, is the black granma's grandchild. All the lokels naturally get on Pinky's case.....i forget the story, but it does have happy ending.
What's amazing about it is that the star is exactly as she'd be in any movie, but as a result of the 'fact' of her race origins...well you'd need to watch it...it's a truly remarkable movie....

27. I saw "Pinky" earlier this year on one of the movie channels

and it is a fine movie. I couldn't remember who played Pinky so I googled and found a movie site that lists the cast members. Jeanne Crain was the actress who played the role of Pinky. It turns out that Elia Kazan directed it, so no wonder it was good!

31. I think one reason that so many got a chuckle is because of

a recent Dave Chapelle Show (Comedy Central) in which there's a pseudo-documentary that has Chapelle playing the part of a blind black man who is a member of the KKK and best sellin author of racist books. Of, course, being blind, he has no idea that he's black.

One of the funnier scenes is when he takes his hood off at a KKK rally where he is a guest speaker, the audience is so shocked that one of their heads actually explode.

If you haven't seen this, it's worth keeping an eye out for his show.
