Job search follow-up
A few weeks back I asked fellow DU'ers for a little moral support regarding interviews I had for a dream job. I had gone to a couple of interviews and was one of three finalists, but then didn't hear anything back for nearly a month. I got lots of support and a good deal of excellent advice, for which I thank you all again.

The upshot is that I got a "Dear John" letter from the company on the day after Thanksgiving. It's amazing how much those resemble relationship breakup letters: "It's not you, it's me...We're just not in the same place...this isn't about you, it's about my needs...I know you'll find someone else..."

So the search continues. But, again, thanks for the support! You folks are great.

1. They're not good enough for you!

Seriously, it just means there's something better out there for you. Good luck.

2. At Least You Got An Interview, Moving Into My 40th Month of Unemployment
I have not seen an interview in well over a year with thousands of resumes out the door. No Dear Job Seeker letters here.

All of the other professionals I know are in similar straits.

7. I know exactly what you mean!
I was unemployed for almost a whole year, no income whatsoever, sending out a gazillion resumes a week. Every time the phone rang, I'd get excited, thinking it was for an interview, but it would inevitably be some goddamned #($(%*(^*)#(*%@()#$%*$ bill collector, especially medical since I didn't have insurance at the time, who didn't give a shit that I had nothing and couldn't find a job.

PM me if you need help with a resume, since I write resumes and put together career portfolios as a side business.

3. FWIW I got a Dear John letter too.
I got a call back for a second audition for a part in a sitcom. I got a call on Sunday and they told me I didn't get the part. I guess I gotta keep looking also, but I'm right there with you.

4. Sometimes a larger company will keep your resume on file
Why don't you write back, thank them for the interview and request that they keep your resume on file if something comes up that may be a good fit for your skills.

They'll be impressed with your tenacity. And maybe the one they hired won't work out. You never know and it can't hurt.

5. I already did!
Thanks for the suggestion. Makes me feel good to know that many of us think alike.

6. Sorry for the Dear John letter
Edited on Mon Dec-01-03 10:24 AM by supernova
You're right. I never noticed how similar those two pieces of communication are. x(

I've gotten a few of those too. It's hard not to take it personally, especially having it go on this long (15 mos for me today).

But my plan for the next week or so is to get on with the temp agency that serves one of the local universities. It won't be the most satisfying work, or the kind of pay that I need to build up my life, but I can survive, and pay for my obsessions. Maybe that's all I can hope for right now.
