5. Carter liver pills

For most of my adult life, up until around the age of 30, I thought that the phrase "...than Carter has liver pills" was a reference to Jimmy Carter, and I just didn't understand the connection. Finally I discovered that "Carter" was a company, not our 39th President.

Has anyone else had a misconception about something, something you believed for years, before you actually discovered the truth? I'll give you another example. In the movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," there is a scene with the principal at the Bueller home, trying to catch him. As he's poking around he runs into the Bueller family dog. A couple of scenes later, the dog is flat out, with the remnants of a potted plant around him. Now, when I saw that, I thought for some reason the dog passed out from eating the plants. And again, many, many years later, it dawned on me that Rooney had actually knocked the dog out by hitting him with the potted plant!
