Firemen Heat Up With 9-11 Widows
It was supposed to have been a helping hand to the grieving families of the firemen who died on September 11th. Unfortunately, some New York firemen have been leaving their own families to marry the rich widows they've been helping.

"It's disgusting, heartbreaking what they've done," said Mary Koenig, whose husband, Gerry Koenig of Staten Island's Rescue 5 squad, ditched her and their two kids for Madeline Bergin, the widow of his friend and firehouse mate, John Bergin, after the World Trade Center attacks.

4. I guess they found it to be their:
widow of opportunity.

Or dangerous liaisons?

Quote from article: "The department saw this happening - knew from mental-health experts that it could happen - and did nothing to intervene," What was the FD supposed to do -- prohibit firemen from visiting the families of decedent co-workers? It sounds like the families expect the FD to act as marriage counselor -- or perhaps marriage police.

I know: the NYFD could start a new counseling program whereby families of firemen who left to marry widows of coworkers -- firemen whose families are still intact would be sent to counsel the women divorced by other firefighters who left to marry widows of former coworkers. Hmm!

5. It sounds like a story for the Jerry Springer show.
I'm not trying to be flip, it just sounds like the kind of thing they love.

7. How many instances of this happening....3, 4?
Is this a real story or a message being sent to smear the widow/widowers and firemen in a politically packaged story?

8. about a dozen, from what I heard this morning
And it just appears that it's a case of firemen taking advantage of vulnerable widows.

10. well, the article claims 'at least a dozen'
why is anyone surprised? Humans, when under extreme stress and loss, tend to bond. In the case of men and women, this tends sto involve sexual relationships. seems to me that this is another reason counseling shouold really be left to professionals, or at least overseen by them in cases like that.

11. Firemen Don't Trust Outsiders
The underlying issue here is the insularity of the Fire Department. Nobody can get through to them. Here's an example of the inappropriateness of peer counseling. But don't try to tell them anything! They won't hear it.
