Overall, do they just not care that much about music in general?

I've known plenty of women with pretty great collections.

Myself..I've been collecting stacks of wax since I was eight years old..I am 45 now....I've got thousands of records and an equal number of CD's.

6. My wife collects Serge Gainsbourg records on vinyl...
as well as any French music she can find, She's a total Francophile.

I think in general, the obsession with music and it's attendant vinyl artifacts record collectors like myself have stems from a lack of female companionship early in adolescence. I know that when I was growing up, I was socially awkward enough that having a girlfriend was as likely as constructing a nuclear weapon out of baboon feces, so music was my companion. While everyone else at age 12 was busy socializing, I was riding my bike to secondhand record shops and collecting punk and reggae 45's. I didn't have the distractions of "friends" and "girls" to fill my life, so I did what made me happy. Luckily my parents were incredibly liberal.

Most women grow up in a constant social milieu, and place importance on said milieu; I didn't, and paid the price later in life when I could never get dates and stuff.

Talk to my therapist!

8. I love music just as much as any man
but I happen not to be as all geeked out about scoring a 45 from 1977 on white vinyl with that rare B side, no. I believe you are referring more to music gearheads than music lovers.

10. When you get into that area where the artifact supersedes the music itself
Then you are dealing with a gearhead. I admit I like the vinyl "artifact, " the cover art endowing the music inside with its own aura and atmosphere, and that's part of the appeal of aollecting records; but for me the music inside the record jacket better be cool, or I won't buy it.

12. Uhm ... I've got about 150 vinyl albums.
Though I could have carried off more when my first marriage split up, I decided to be magnanimous and replace a lot of my old vinyl with CDs, but I had closer to 300 albums at the peak. It's all rock and roll -- Beatles, Cheap Trick, Todd Rundgren, Utopia, Max Webster (a Canadian album-rock band from the late seventies), some one-hit wonders I bought in used record stores.

I'd guess I have about an even number of CDs that I bought myself, though Mr. Nownow and I are both fanatics and have bought another 250 or so CDs together in the past six years or so. There's little he listens to that I don't like, and little I listen to that he doesn't like.

Most of what I like is British Invasion influenced guitar pop. We're always finding new bands we like -- I'm the one who found Sloan. I listen to an independent rock station when I'm in the car, so I actually find more bands than he does.

If I hadn't loved music as much as I do, I wouldn't have married either of the men I've been with. In fact, Mr. Nownow and I met years ago at a show, when I was still married, and I wrote to him because I saw his name on that band's mailing list years later, after I'd broken up with my first husband.

I don't know -- not all women like music as anything but wallpaper. I've known plenty of men who feel that way, too.

13. Oh good grief
First off, what does collecting vinyl or not have to do with caring about music in general?

Second, add me to the list of women who collect. I have some really weird shit on vinyl including a copy of "Pac-Man Fever". :-)

14. I have a lot of women customers for my vinyl auctions
I have been selling 60's and 70's rock vinyl on Ebay for a while now and have had a number of women customers, mostly in the US and Europe. Not many in Asia that I know of. The ones who have bought have tended towards more esoteric music, not standard radio station rock.

19. used to have 200 or so...
...gave them away a couple years ago though.

I've always attributed the fact that I care about music less than other people to the fact that I was tortured by music lessons as a child. If you want your child to hate music, give her piano lessons from an early age!

20. Actually, I've met a lot of them

But then again, I've spent much of my adult life hobnobbing in record-collecting circles.

Admittedly, female record collectors are a decided minority, but the ones I've met were all passionate and knowledgable about their chosen genre, friendly, emotionally mature, and willing to take a young upstart under their wing. Which is a hell of a lot more than I can say for a goodly number of the male record collectors I've met!

21. For Sale (possibly)
The woman I bought this house from left over 300 classical L-P albums. Most are German labels. It is the best collection of classical music I have ever seen. I don't have a turn-table to audition the quality of the records, but maybe you do.

As a classical music fan, I might keep the discs. Who knows?

a whole bunch more singles (including Beatles picture sleeves). I always used to go to the "record collectors conventions" when they were in town. I can remember standing next to Peter Wolf as we both were looking through records.

I have several hundred jazz LPs.

Regarding the turntable problem. I've been looking for an old retro stereo; the kind that comes in a beautiful wood console cabinet. I haven't had much luck with that!

There is a new product on the market -- Crosley makes a combination cassette-CD player-radio-turntable that is cute. I don't know what the sound quality is like, but Crosley is a good old name.

31. My wife actually has quite a few records
but I have more - and continue to acquire more. She may be a bit odd - she is also into silent movies, and when she goes to her silent film festival, she is one of only a handful of females there, out of several hundred people. She also likes Star Trek...uh oh....maybe I better ask to see some pictures of her when she was young, just to make sure she was born a girl...

:hi:

Mostly progressive jazz and a few Rock classics from the 60's, 70's and early 80's.

Almost all of my 60's collection, I warrant, came from an older brother. Some of it was supplemented by an excellent record store near the Underground.

36. Ooh, baby, yeah!
I've known a couple dozen "chick musicians" and several "girl DJs". All of them collected music. I wouldn't be surprised if most of them were major Napster "banditz".

The most famous one in my pantheon is Diane Alexander, who was a girlfriend of mine before she became a professional broadcaster. Closest I ever came to celebrity. And quite the fun date, even leaving the question of sex aside. Also the most devout metalhead I ever met.

Local Philly DJ Debbi Calton is said to have an enormous collection of vinyl, polystyrene (CDs) and slates (78s).

The 80s were a great era for women in music. I hope there is a resurgence of that soon -- "Too much Cock / Spoils the Rock".
