The Red House Painters/Mark Kozalek...
Any fans on here? I worship the RHP, and just started getting into Kozalek's new band Sun Kil Moon. So far so good. Very Red House Painters esque but even better than some of the RHP's latter material I think.

1. RHP are freakin' awesome!
BRB...I need to go modify my entry into the obscure bands thread.

The best band ever...the 11 minute, Neil Youngy version of Paul McCartney's "Silly Love Songs" is an all-time classic!

3. If I had to compare it to anyone I'd say Neil Young....
They (he) veer between plaintive, moody folk songs, and louder, noisy guitar rave ups.

Mark Kozalek has a much better voice than Neil Young I think.

It's great mellow, relaxation music but is not melancholic or depressing by any means.

6. No, nothing like Neil Young....
Just the first thing that came to mind. I guess it depends on what you are into. It's guitar based, introspective rock. Most of it acoustic based.

If you are into bombastic epic prog rock or teen pop then you wouldn't be into it. But if you are into things like Radiohead or Coldplay or even most indie rock then you would probably enjoy it.

8. I'll give it a listen.
I'm always open to new music. The problem I have with Neil Young (Without getting into an arguement) is his voice grates on me like nails on a chalkboard. And I hate his guitar playing. But I enjoy Coldplay and Radiohead.

7. Vocals not like Neil's
Just that Crazy Horse sounding lead guitar. The vocals are a bit whiney in a whole different way than Neil Young, but the lyrics are smart, and poetic, not like NY's "Moon In June made me swoon" high school rhymes. It makes all the difference in the world.

Again, they don't sound like Neil Young, but the lead guitar work has some striking similarities.

5. Undefinable
When I first heard about them, it was in the context of "a great album to take to the beach." Ocean Beach starts of with an accoustic guitar piece that is so catchy, you'll be tapping your feet and humming it in your head for weeks...no vocals. They play a blend of Neil Young-style droning, feedbacky guitars with Cowboy Junkies-type laid back pacing. Sometimes. Sometimes they let loose for some great licks, like the jam from Yes' "Long Distance Runaround."

They like extended, drawn out compositions. They do a cover of the Car's "All Mixed Up" that I listened to for five minutes before I realize what the song was! Their re-do's are kinda like when Bryan Ferry covers a song...you rarely recognize it right away.

9. You shoulld have said they were a 4AD band
I vaguely recall hearing them years ago when 4AD was big. I like all the bands on that label, especially Dead Can Dance and This Mortal Coil.

10. Good point....I guess I dont' think of them as typical 4AD...
Maybe just because they are American and I think of that as an English label (I know...the Breeders, the Pixies, etc.) however erroneous that perception might be.
