How Fast Can You Type?

Generally speaking, I type at a brisk 45 wpm when I'm just futzing around. But I can kick it into 5th gear and type at 60 wpm when I'm focused.

Wow, I tested at 88 wpm. Crazy thing is, I never took typing. Taught myself using hunt-and-peck on a Commodore VIC-20, and I just got faster. I still have to glance at the keyboard once in awhile.

I did 107 gross speed on Huck Finn with 6% error rate (translates to 101 wpm net). I don't do that much of that kind of typing anymore, though. I used to be closer to 112 on that test, back when I was doing document prep for the nasty fascist economic pundit a couple of years ago.

My dad used to type 120 on the linotype, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised -- I think some such things probably have to do with the hardwiring of our brains and the muscular control that we inherit.

15. Pretty Darn Fast

My mother was a transcriptionist, (still is at 69 y/o), so i learned to type about the same time i learned to write. (My mom still can transcribe at >120wpm, or about speaking speed.)

When i was in high school, i had to take a typing class in my sophomore year. On the first day, the teacher was telling people a, s, d, f, j, k, l, ; and the fingers and stuff. I was typing away and the teacher came over to me, and pulled the paper out of my machine, thinking i was just goofing off, typing gibberish.

Well, i was touch typing the textbook page. He read it and said "Why don't you just go to the gym and shoot hoops during this hour from now on." At the end of the term, i won the typing medal at an adjusted 78wpm on a manual typewriter.

I made some cash in college typing other people's papers, since i could knock them off in an hour or so.

I'm a little faster now on a computer, but part of that is that there's less key throw and the other part is that i don't worry about errors since they're so easy to fix.

that musicians with instrumental training have an advantage with typing speed. I know a lot of people who are computer programmers and type VERY quickly who have some training either on a band instrument or on piano.

I started piano in 1st grade, got my computer in 6th grade.

On edit: it's worth noting too that musical experience greatly assists in learning another language. I've had it explained to me that once you play an instrument, you start using a part of your brain better - the part that can help you repeat what you hear. Working with musical notes is then a great lead-in to learning new sounds and words. Bottom line? Introduce your kids to music as soon as possible!

I don't look down either and prefer to look at the screen while typing. Sometimes I can hit around 120wpm - which is about as fast as I'm talking to myself while typing! ;-)

You know who's FAST? Doc Gonzo (now, once again, I Am Jack's Smirking Revenge). I watched him type at our 2001 get-together at Davsand's in Illinois and he can throw it at, like, 400 words per minute.

A temp agency that applied to right after college had me clocked at 40 WPM. I admit that I actually cheated on that test. They had me wait in a room for a while until the interviewer was ready. I was bored so I read the pages on the wall. My typing test was on one of those pages and I had it practically memorized. I probably type faster now though, thanks to DU and entrying results in at work.

33. When I was in the Air Force

I worked in the Comm Center and worked on old DSTE equipment. We had to type on manual teletypes, which involved hitting a numeric key to convert the keyboard to numerics so you could type numbers and punctuation, then an alpha key to go back to letters. This produced a paper tape one fed through a machine for transmittal.

The most critical parts of a message were the header and trailer, which contained all the routing and classification information. No errors were allowed. If it was a coded message, no errors were allowed at all.

At my peak, I was timed at 120+ WPM, no errors, sustained for 6 minutes.

I could do pure alphanumeric code in 5 character blocks at @30 WPM for 30 minutes a time. That used to drive me purely insane, however.

Judging from the job description, I think you and I had the same job -- only I was in the Army, of course.
I got knocked back a week in AIT because I missed a single period in the routing indicator. Boy, did that suck (and you can be SURE I checked the results thoroughly the following week).
I wasn't quite as fast as you -- but the teletypes, set up as they were, were a lot faster than typewriters.

I got knocked back a week in Tech School (our version of AIT) because I spent way too much time drinking that last week. :D

I used my speed to come up with the coolest shift of all time. Second shift, the 1600-2400 shift, always got nailed because of a variety of factors. You remember, had to do the shift changeover and, with all the crypto in the room, that took literally hours. And everyone on base dropped their messages off at 1600 when they got off. So naturally there was a huge backlog of messages that we had to fight through all night.

I suggested to my NCOIC that he let me come in at noon and do nothing but type out messages. No routing of outgoing or incoming, just grab messages and type, until 2000 hours. I didn't have to muck about with shift change, nothing.

They started letting me go at about 1900 when all the outgoing messages were done, of course. :evilgrin: Those silly little half pagers? I'd put 10 or 12 of them on one tape at a time.

The worst was Friday night, when we had the Weekly News. That was 5-10 pages of intel in alphanumeric code on the peace protestors outside the base (I was stationed at a nuclear missile base in Europe). Gods, but that was a nasty message to type out, it had to be perfect.

But that 1200-2000 shift was the most perfect shift ever for a 19 year old. Got off in time to go out drinking, got to sleep in every day; it was a dream.
