I've decided to look for a new job. But there's a problem.
I can't take the commute anymore. It robs me of an average of fifteen hours per week. It's misery.

The problem if I find a new job closer to home is that Mrs. V.'s commute gets more difficult. She doesn't drive and will either have to take the commuter bus or get in a carpool -- and the latter might require a change in her hours, and that might not be approved, so this whole thing might be moot . . .

So, short of a lottery win, one of us is going to be miserable.

Welcome to marriage. :loveya:

What a strange way to wind up a post about looking for a new job.

2. What about moving closer to work?
Is that possible?

I know the feeling - went through something similar when my partner and I first joined up. 2 hours on the bus each way meant I got a lot of reading done but not a lot else.

We moved. It ended up being the best solution and we like the house I bought.

3. Not an option. This house was a miracle, still is, in so many ways.
And we've more than doubled its value. Barring the unforseeable, we plan to stay here until we move to California after Mrs. V. retires.

A lot of reading. At least Mrs. V. loves to read.

Sigh.

Thanks for your reply, P-Cat. :)

5. I'm so sorry....
Sounds like the options are pretty miserable all the way around.

Congratulations on the value rising, though. We've been lucky that ours has been maintaining its value, much less appreciating.

6. Is Mrs. V locked into her job b/c of benefits/pensions or
another reason? Or is it just not easy to change jobs in her field?

That's very tough, I know. When we lived in NoVa I drove 1-1/2 hours to the freaking metro stop at Vienna, then another half hour into downtown DC - but at least I got to do it 4 days a week, then whittled it down to 3 days before I chucked the commute permanently.

How long 'til retirement? It does sound like you have a wonderful home in a lovely area, so I know moving isn't an option for you two.

7. She has 21 years in and wants to retire with 30.
I think the benefits if she does so are good but I don't know the deets.

Nine years. I can wait. Look at the goal!

 Thanks Flaxbee.
