We already have furniture--bought or inherited--not that Antiques Roadshow will ever see any of my "inheritance." A few pieces from Ikea would not transform my (ahem) "eclectic" decor into "Scandinavian cheerful."

Ikea is good for picking up useful odds & ends. Like decent-looking bookcases. Yes, you can spend more money & get better bookcases--but I've already spent that extra money on books.

Besides, the Houston store is a good place to enjoy our highly diverse city. Lots of different folks shop there.

On your first visit to Ikea--just browse! Take notes for future reference. The store is designed to lead you on a winding path through the whole place. Once you known the layout, you can go directly to what you need. (Not to say you couldn't pick up an accessory or two.)

We just bought the Kullen 3 door wardrobe and two Aneboda 5 drawer chests. Nice furniture but I have just one complaint, the assembly instructions aren't clear enough and sometimes you can put the item together wrong which requires taking it apart again. My son just got his first apartment so we're getting him the 2 kitchen start boxes.

They do manufacture all over the globe, like Tikhvan and Indonesia and they are very committed to developing and using renewable and sustainable resources, like wood or recycled materials like glass and metal in their products. Their furniture is not bad looking either - we have quite a bit of their very basic pine shelving in our basement to hold our books and some of the higher end modular pieces in our family room and like it very much. My daughter's bedroom is furnished entirely in IKEA furniture. They have this bed that is about 3 and a half feet off the ground that is ideal for her at the moment. It keeps the whippets off and her stuffed animal collection intact and provides her with play space underneath.
