You are absolutely correct! A lot of little earthquakes do release the tension on the fault line.....but gently...

One monster quake releases the tension too, but ALL AT ONCE! And often with dire consequences!

9. The San Andraes looks pretty quiet, however the Hayward fault...

13. I'm super concerned when the north end of the Hayward fault....

rips loose with a 7-8 earthquake.

Read the late Marc Reisner's book Dangerous Place : California's Unsettling Fate. It's an unsettling read in many ways, but an important message nevertheless.

Delta levees could liquify and breach. Unreinforced buildings will topple to the ground, freeway overpasses buckle, and the cantilever structure of the Bay Bridge will fall into the bay below. Several thousand people will be killed by the event. More troubles will ensue as the fault destroys canals, power lines, sewer lines, railroad tracks, and highways (all built across the fault) that could bring help and aid to the dazed survivors. Even the airports will be knocked out of commission as their runways, built on bay mud are turned to jello by the ground motion. Loma Prieta was a whimper compared to what the Hayward fault has in store.

Shasta Dam to fail SPECTACULARLY, sending a 500 foot high wall of water onto my house.

15. I've got Monticello Dam aimed squarely at my house

It's only 304 feet high, but the damn lake is full and there are squirrelly faults in the region!
