I have two cats, Erin the tabby male and Lucky the b/w female.

Erin has the standard "meow," especially when he wants a treat.

Lucky, even though she's bigger than Erin, still has a soft "mew" like a kitten.

And both have the "love rumble." :-)

Peppercorn, the b/w female

has a loud, obnixious meow, which fits, since she is a lound, obnoxious cat.

Yoda, the tabby male (this is kind of weird; apparently, our cats were separated at birth)

since he got his junk cut off at a young age, still has a silly kitten meow, and is in a near constant state of purring.

2. Imhotep has a huge warbly voice

and he's LOUD. One of his nicknames is Nine Alarm. The first time the vet heard him, she said "Oh, we're part siamese, are we?" Immie's pitch black, but apparently he has both the siamese voice and the double-curve claws.

Quark speaks in short, high-pitched barks. He purrs all the time.

Evie sings all the time. She's quite the Li'l Diva. We're pretty sure Imhotep is her dad - she comes by it honestly.

Caesar is pretty quiet, but he has a very distinctive voice - pitch is mid-range, conversational. He gronks when he purrs. He also snores very softly.

Plato and Socrates both have, er, somewhat nellie voices for cats that big (18 and 20 lbs, respectively).

Neutrino has a little bitty girlcat voice to match her small size - but you can hear her purr across the room.

3. Barney has a soft meow

Since Morrison is part bobcat, he has a real raspy growl! It's really cute!

4. Nico has a soft meow. Olive makes a horrible "Maaah" sound.

Tate (aka Mr. Peeps): He doesn't meow, he just has a high-pitched peep.


Charlie: Peeps just like Tate, but it's even higher in pitch!

6. I'm glad you brought this up

It's something I've thought about rather a lot, what with trying to analyze Lucy's different voices.

She has a pretty standard "Roww," which I take to mean simply "Hi" or something. Then there's a more drawn-out version, "Rowwww," which is "I want something, and it's your job to figure out what." When she really wants something, it's higher-pitched, often even more drawn-out and has a question mark at the end. And when I'm skritchin' her tummy, she often says a clipped "Row" or just sort of rumbles, like "Rrrrr," in expression of her pleasure.

Once in awhile she'll do a "Row" that's short and kind of goes up in the middle. I think this is when she's trying to tell me something, like "My bathroom's on fire" or "You have something on your chin."

Curious creatures, wot?

7. One of my cats howls like a dog

Leo, the black puffy one, has a yowl that sounds like a werewolf. He can be very loud and obnoxious when he wants attention (which is almost constantly)

Edgar, the black and white one, has a fairly standard central casting-type meow, but he has a bit of an "accent" to it at various times.

8. Mowrah! Mowrah!

One of my cats has an extensive vocabulary of different meows. "Mowrah" is the inquisitive meow, which means "look at me and be my slave."

When she is mad about being accidently locked in a room, she comes out and says "rrrrranht! rrrrranht! rrrrranht!rrrrranht! rrrrranht!" We have now started imitating her when we are not happy about something.

The other cat only has one meow, but pokes me when I don't pay attention.

Then there is the vocabulary of aggressive claw sharpening.

9. My yellow tabby cat sounds like Edward G. Robinson.

Myah. Myah. Myah.

My big burly tuxedo cat has an itty bitty meow, but when he purrs he sounds like he has a V8 engine in him.

My siamese, Cocoa, is a typical Siamese and talks loudly.

Momcat, Fluffy, just rumbles.

11. Everything but a meow

I've heard almost every sound a cat could make out of him, except he never learned to meow. I've heard him chirp, squeak, trill, chtter, warble, growl, purr (of course), whine, squeal, yell and all sorts of othter sounds, including a period where he would call me 'paaaa", but he never has meowed in 9 years.

I love those bird imitations that cats do. Mine do it so seldom it's a real treat when they do.

13. Well, of the indoor cats

Bear, the huge male, has the tiniest little squeak that has a quiver to it. He only uses it in defiance, like when he's clawing at a doorframe and we call him down. He looks over and does this shaky little meow, then carries on.

Dora and Scribbles, the girls are both loud, but Scribbles meow is much deeper than her mother's. They usually only meow when they have "captured" one of their toys and want us to look at them.

Outside, there's an orange stray that I call Squeakers because, well, she squeaks. MommaKitty is loudly vocal, but I think it's mostly an attention getter as well.

19. Milo and Jeoffry have very different voices.

Milo:


This big fluffy guy has a repertoire of squeaks, chirps, trills and mumbles. He usually greets me with "Mreep?" When he talks to his roommate, Jeoffry, he trills.


Jeoffry:


I think he's part Siamese, and not just because he's long and slender. He's really loud, and he announces his presence with "YOW! YOW! YOW!" Oddly, he doesn't YOW at Milo. They just trill at each other.
