Pet Owners: Are Your Little Fur-Babies PICKY EATERS?

Our little Mitzi is semi-picky. She'll turn her nose up at whatever's in her bowl, if she thinks that she can do better by begging at the table. When she finally realizes that she's not going to get any free handouts, she'll go ahead and eat her regular dog food. (Mostly dry kibble with a little wet food mixed in.)

Most of the time, we're pretty good about not giving in and not feeding her from the table... but we're definitely not consistent enough for her to be completely convinced... so she begs anyway.

1. It depends, there are some things they will just NOT eat no matter what

but most things they'll dig right in with no problems.

They aren't THAT picky, but there are a few types of cat food they'll just ignore.

2. My cat, Chess, is

She only eats Fancy Feast canned food. And Deli Cat dry food. Nothing else.

I don't feed her what I'm eating, except the milk I have left from a bowl of cereal.

3. My older dog

doesn't care about food at all. Not at all. You can put down a plate of steak and she's as likely as not to sniff at it and leave the room.

The puppy so far is an eager eater. :shrug:

4. Our 2 Min Pins...

will eat anything. They've eaten onion, radish, pickle...you name it, if it hits the floor it history. Now our 2 barncats are very picky...imagine that:eyes: One will eat a boiled shrimp, but the other puts his nose in the air as if we've offended hi.

but Riley won't go anywhere near Iams cat food. He loves his Science Diet though.

8. I Don't Know If It's *Better* Than Science Diet...

... but it's definitely better than most of the bargain brands. My vet sells Science Diet at her animal hospital (so obviously she thinks it's worthwhile too) but when I told her that I fed our dog Eukanuba Adult Maintenance kibble, she told me that it was a good choice, and explained why. The "low-residue" also means firmer stools, so that's a plus too... in the event of indoor accidents the pick-up is much easier than a wipe-up-mop-up-steam-clean.

10. You caught my attention

with the low-residue discussion...firmer and less smelly is always a plus. I just went from one cat to two and the amount of crap (literally) in their litter box is disturbing. I swear it more than doubled. I used to scoop it every 4-5 days, now I do it AT LEAST once a day. It's insanity.

I think it might have something to do with the fact that my 2 year old cat is eating the kitten food...

11. My dogs and cats

all get a variety of whole foods.....cooked and raw.

I have to say, since we have been doing this, (for 4 yrs now since we learned the truth about commercial pet food) they are much less picky, their coats and teeth are amazing, there is no 'pet smell' in my house with 2 large dogs and 2 cats.

It's truly been amazing for us.

Sorry if I sound like a commercial... But it's true! My husband was a skeptic, but now he's convinced this is the way to go.

15. Good for you, Mother Jones!

I find myself sounding like a commercial since we put our four cats on raw last year. I have to agree -- they eat at meal times, have great teeth and coats, and their litter box is almost odorless. There are fewer, firmer, and almost odor-free stools, which helps a lot!

The Abys almost died on commercial food and now are the picture of health. They get ground rabbit or chicken with bones and organs. Sounded gross at first, but it just looks like ground beef. My husband was a skeptic, too ... but not anymore! :D

I would never have guessed this would have made such a dramatic difference. It's remarkable. I love how there is almost no odor in the litterbox too!


The money for the holistic vet 4 yrs ago, was well worth it!

12. My lab eats just about everything, except ...

Cucumber and lettuce. She gums 'em and spits them out. :P

22. How Odd... My ShihTzu absolutely LOVES cucumbers...

But I have to cut the slices thin and then into 1/4 pieces. Same thing for tomatos.

They will only eat certain types of cat food, and will not touch most types of people food, and won't even eat some types of cat treats.

Defintely pickly little beasties.

21. My parrot Zoe is a very finicky eater. Even for a parrot.

She drives me crazy at times, but I still love her.
