Acer Laptops?
Acer Aspire 5003WLCi Notebook has been recommended to us by a guy at Comp USA and the mom & pop computer store (an Acer, anyway).

Stats:

15.4 in 1280 x 800 Screen
AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology ML-32
512MB DDR-SDRAM RAM
60gb hARD dRIVE
14.3 in W x 11.0 in D x 1.5 in H/6.2 lbs

$849.99

Just normal family use, nothing heavy duty, possible pics and video in the future. Is there anything I'm missing? No software included, as far as I can tell.

3. wireless?
Do you have wireless @ home? If so, you are gonna want a wireless laptop. Of course, you could always buy a wireless PCMCIA card.

I'm not a big fan of Acer computers myself. Check out consumer reports and see if they have anything bad to say about Acer. I'm too lazy right now...:)

5. That's not too bad I guess
I'm sure you will get Windows XP with it, I don't know if they install anything else. It looks to be the price that it goes for everywhere.

It's hard to say about the quality of Acer products. These days a lot of that kind of equipment is made by other manufacturers and then brand labeled by another. You might try to look on the net to see if you can see some user reviews before you buy the laptop. Keep in mind that you will see people complain about every brand, so don't be bummed out of you see a few bad reviews.

Here is a bit more on the CompUSA page:

http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=337477&pfp=cat3

Looks like it comes with a bit more software.
Good luck.

6. My B-I-L got an Acer desktop.
Edited on Fri Mar-03-06 01:27 PM by kick-ass-bob
Had nothing but problems.

However, that has been several (3-5) years

And of course, this is just anecdotal.

7. I had a Acer PC about 8 years back
did not like it. It lasted about 2 years.

I have a Winbook and I am extremely pleased.

8. I have two Acer laptops, and no problems so far.
Mine just turned one year old, and the other one (that the kids use) we've only had for two months. The price you're quoting seems about right.

9. I'm thinking maybe I should just go with
Consumer Reports. Dell Interspiron 6000 for about the same price.

10. I've had my Travelmate 4020 for 6 months now -- it's been a dream machine
When I was in the market for a laptop I called my geek & he told me to buy what he himself uses. He's a smart guy & I value his opinion & he didn't steer me wrong. It is a good, reliable machine.

11. I have an Acer 3000
It is very similar. It has 802.11g wireless card so can connect anywhere there is a hotspot. The downside is that the hard drive failed within three months but they replaced it. I had to send it to the repair depot but it took less than a week.

It came with some software, mostly music and video software. No spreadsheets or word processing but I had a copy of Office 2003 that I loaded on there.

Seems like a good machine.

12. Whatever you do, don't buy a laptop from Gateway.
Mine's been in the shop three times within the first six months of me buying it.

I wouldn't even go Dell. I'd buy from the mom-n-pop store, so that if you have any problems you can have them remedied immediately instead of having to ship the computer off for service, which, even under warranty will cost you about $75 (shipping to and from).

Next time, I'm buying my pc local from a local mom and pop.

15. I had one from '99 to '03
Took some fierce abuse (as you would expect when a 15 year old gets a laptop for Christmas, haha). Under normal use, I'd probably still have it.

19. I forgot to mention that the battery life is low
I get about an hour, depending on what I am doing. Of course, more expensive laptops will have longer-lasting batteries. This is only an issue if you want to be truly portable.
