The Paul Butterfield Blues Band--- One of my favorites. Get the album East-West or the Anthology. Incredibly good Blues jamming---check out 'Work Song' with Mike Bloomfield, Elvin Bishop, Mark Naftalin and Paul Butterfield trading solos on their instruments. Butterfield is on Harmonica.

The Kinks--say no more. Some Doors stuff has some sick Blues too.

The Original Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green---Peter Green might be my favorite blues guitarist ever, with Mike Bloomfield just behind.

Check out old Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Albert King, Freddie King stuff from that era too.

Someone mentioned Butterfield Blues Band already, also great stuff.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis on vocals yet. . . possibly one of the best female blues singers I've ever heard. Her version of "Hesitation Blues" with Kakounen and Cassady (from the Jefferson Airplane) backing her up is NOT to be missed.

Speaking of Kakounen and Cassady, check out Hot Tuna while you're at it.

Fleetwood Mac, pre-female vocalist days :) (don't get me wrong Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie are awesome, but for dirty blues, you have to go way back).

Early Hendrix stuff, he played blues like you wouldn't believe when he wasn't dosed (then he just played otherworldly stuff that was just mind boggling).

Muddy Waters.

You could jump forward a few years and check out the Allman Brothers. . . awesome blues stuff from them as well.

The four CD "Nuggets" box is a great intro to 60's garage rock. Back then, there were "one-hit wonders" everywhere you looked. Check out "Hey Little Girl" by The Syndicate Of Sound and "Talk, Talk" by The Music Machine for starters.

Animals - try their version of "Boom, Boom", as well as "Roberta". The Stones version of "Down The Road Apiece" (from The Rolling Stones Now) is not too bad, even if they don't know the words.

If you want more, just ask. It is not hard to get me talking about 60's rock!

(Of course, if you want to go even further back, get a copy of "Rooster Blues" by Lightnin' Slim and play it until it wears out. :) )

I know others have said this, but it can't be emphasized enough.

Peter Green wrote Black Magic Woman.

Michael Bloomfield is the guitarist on Highway 61 Revisited.

Santana has said that seeing Fleetwood Mac when he was 17 and hearing Peter Green completely inspired him to play guitar. Also, when Bloomfield stopped playing guitar for years (related to being a junkie, but also because he really didn't think he was that good a guitarist), Santana tracked him down and told him he was one of the greatest ever and that he HAD to start playing again, which he did. I guess I would too if Santana said that to me!

Jimmy Page has said that Peter Green and the version of Fleetwood Mac Green was in were the best British blues band ever.
