Okay, DU science folk, help me understand this phenomena with

my night light: I have an electric night light that I plugged into my bathroom because my husband is gone tonight (he doesn't like them so i normally don't use one), and I plug it in, and as my hand moves away from the receptacle, the light dims and goes out. As my hand moves towards it, it brightens. I can "pulse" the light my moving my hand closer and then away in a rhythmic motion. Why is this happening?

It comes on when the room gets dark, and turns off when it's light.

My house is filled with them - they make environmental sense, and they're a lot easier than having to plug the damn thing in every time you want to use it.

6. But I'm not turning off any lights, nor am I blocking ambient light.

The room has an overhead light and my hand was below the fixture. It has dimmed as I've walked away and the light was turned out.

It's come on after leaving the room. I guess it doesn't pay to be so drunk that I can type but not deduce anything. I don't remember anything on the packaging about it being "sensitive" like this.

18. It was defective. Still on with bright sunlight and then

overhead light flooding the room. It probably got bounced around the house by my boys just enough to spoil the sensor.

Most TV's dim as the room gets darker. Your night-light does the oppisite. Your night-light is having its own light focused on it as your hand moves away. So it thinks it is the daytime and it dims. I'm drunk. The concept is sound.

14. Naw, it's just a defective light.

It stays on in the light when it should be powering down, but sometimes fades even if nothing else is happening around it. I guess the light sensor is shot.

I think my two kiddos have tendencies like "indigo".
