3. It's a hell of a page turner.

I stayed up and read it until about 3 or 4 in the morning the first night I started it, and had it done in a couple days.

It ain't great literature, and it plays fast and loose with history, but who cares? It's a fucking entertaining, and compelling, read, and it's just darn cool, all the conspiracies tied together.

It was recommended to me by one of our local librarians as a fun read -- and I said half-heartedly that I would read it. I picked it up a few months later and wasn't expecting much. I'm more of a nonfiction person myself. But I too found myself literally unable to put the book down once I started it. I've even gotten the audiobook and listened to that.

No, it's not great literature but it's very enjoyable light reading.

4. I finally read it a couple of months ago.....

I can't really say why I waited so long to read it.... I'm a voracious reader. I think it had something to do with hearing so much about people trying to prove or disprove the facts. I thoroughly enjoyed it though and also got the prequel "Angels and Demons"... another hard to put down book.

Just my opinion, but I was pretty gripped by it in the beginning as well but towards the end it seemed like the author just wanted to wrap it up as fast as possible.

Hope you enjoy it though. I'm glad I read it if just for the theories it presents.

read "Foucault's Pendulum" by Umberto Eco, a much better book about the sacred feminine, and see how Dan Brown apparently ripped off the idea from many much better writers. :thumbsup:

I figure, history is written by the winners, so who knows what is true and what isn't?

It's a damn good book, and one of the only novels I've read in the past couple of years. I also liked Angels and Demons which has some cool scientific twists.

and although it's a work of fiction, may of the concepts they talk about including how many Christian concepts are actually reworks of Paganism aren't actually far fetched.

If anything, it takes a giant club and bashes the knees of Christian/Catholic Dogma

Personally I don't buy the had-child-and-bloodline-in-France theme, but based on a lot of Biblical scholarship, I'd say Magdelene was a much higher authority in the church than Christians are now led to believe. Even the Catholics admit she wasn't a prostitute as they once taught. If people read this and at least recognize that Christianity was once a much more diverse set of beliefs, I'd say the book has had great impact. (since most people wouldn't pick up the non-fiction works it's based on..)

42. The Priory of Sion has been openly admitted as a fraud.

The folks who supposedly protected this "sacred blood-line" believed that flesh was evil (as opposed to spirit) - thus are hardly likely to be impressed by a religious founder who had children.

Opus Dei does not have monks - its entire purpose is to have Catholics fulfilling their faith (the O.D. version of it, that is) whilst living out of the religious state.

I'm sorry, but Brown is sooooooo wrong on his basic issues I'm not about to trust him on others.

But for entertainment, it's a fast, fun read. I enjoyed it.

As long as you're not going into it expecting some marvelous literary or historical revelations and take it for what it is...it's good. I think that a lot of the problems that people have had with it is, because of the incredible hype (and face it, he came up with a killer gimmick), they had higher literary expectations.

And I enjoyed Angels and Demons a bit more...of course, I read it not too long before John Paul II died, so that might've helped a little bit, too. Made it a bit more topical...

Timing is everything, y'know.
