These pictures are of my Papa("paw-paw" yeah, i'm from the south) and his buddie in a photo booth a few days before leaving out for the Vietnam war. I love these photos, and i must say, my Papa was a good-looking soldier! ;)




btw, he's one more Vietnam vet against the Iraq War!

2. Me with the late Mr. DTW Sr.

Lifelong JFK type democrat, veteran and strong supporter of civil rights even when it wasn't safe to do so. He risked his life or physical harm more than once in the deep south by accompanying black friends and neighbors to the local stores and around town and dared (but not provoking) anyone to mess with them. He may not look it in the picture with me but he was a big man and not to be messed with.

3. If I had my scanner here right now

I'd scan the picture I have of my grandfather from WW2.

Kind of scary to think that if my grandmothers fiance hadn't been killed in the war, I wouldn't be here right now.

8. My granddad...

He is the one who is sitting on the right wing above the propeller. It is the only picture of him from back then that I have. The plane is a Porky-Corsica that had gone down during a flight. I'm not sure about the whole story. I know that he flew 70+ successful missions in WWII.

I had two uncles serve in WWII. Neither one came back. One is burried in France, the other in Belgium.

I had one uncle on the other side of the family drafted during Vietnam. He was functionally illiterate, but they still took him and turned him into a "model soldier". He served 1 1/2 tours-- he was pulled from his second tour when he started acting strangely-- collecting "trophies" from his kills, and exhibiting other anti-social behavior.

The war ruined his life. He came back to the US and never had another sober day in his life. He died of alcoholism two years ago, in a small trailer he parked on his brother's farm. He left a couple kids and an ex-wife behind.

That's one of the reasons why I am a pacifist and conscientious objector, and have been since I was a child.

23. Here's Uncle Mead and the King days before D-Day

Uncle Mead (wearing the gloves) commanded Admiral Hall's flagship, USS Ancon, at Omaha beach and had the best seat in the house on that very bad day. Odd, I have no pictures of myself in uniform. Same goes for my Pops and my other uncles who served in the Pacific theater during WWII.
