Over the top?
A few days ago one of my neighbors put a yardsign out that is being distrubuted by one of the local Evangelical churches. The yard sign says simply []b]Keep Christ In Christmas . I don't have any problems with that. I don't have any problems with my neighbor expressing his views either.

Last night I came home from work about 10PM or so and as I came down the street, I noticed that the sign had been outlined with White Christmas lights and illuminated.

To me, advocating keeping Christ in Christmas is a "back to basics" type of message. Maybe even a minimalist approach to the holiday, but putting christmas lights on it?

Is that over the top?

I dunno....maybe I'm getting crochity in my old age but I think all the outdo-your-neighbor christmas lighting is a symbol of the commercialization of the holiday and adding lights to what is considered to be a religous message......

Am I too critical?

1. Yep, you're too critical ;-)
the lights make the sign easier to see at night, and bring a little holiday cheer.

I don't think it's necessary to completely wipe out all the commercial aspects of Christmas in order to keep the spiritual message in tact. Do you?

8. Thought about that
but where do you draw the line? (Individually not as a society)

I'm apt to say that I can't define it, but I know it when I see it. ;-)

2. God forbid
God forbid your neighbor should express themselves on their own property.

Horrors!

5. not the point
I don't mind that they did it. I meant it as a social commentary.

I would never think of mentioning it to him because, it is his right to do so.

Sorry if I gave the wrong impression.

3. Nope. Not over the top. NIce message, after all.
Now, if she starts proclaiming Christmas as the birth of her savior George W. Bush (never know with these evangelicals), then it's over the top.

for the Season" in red lights with little white chaser lights around it. Tacky, tacky, tacky...IMO

9. I see your point, but at the same time, I agree that it's a nice message..
it's hard sometimes I think for some folks like your neighbor to see the fine line between taste and tacky...I guess some little lights around it would not be the worst; I think the chaser lights on 'Jesus is the Reason for the Season' is definitely tacky!
But I guess to each his/her own...

12. what does Christ have to do with Christmas anyway?
Santa brings the toys. :D

If they wanted to put spirituality back into Christmas they'd have Jesus come down the chimney and give out presents.

from Full Metal Jacket ?

The Marine recruits in their barracks on Christmas day....the Drill Instructor lead them in singing Happy Birthday dear Jesus!

I thought that was strangely profound. (emphasis on the word "Strangely")
