Question: Who painted...
Edited on Sun Mar-05-06 06:42 PM by rbnyc
that painting of the wicked little cat pulling back a curtain to reveal a girl in bed?

Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I remember that painting fom a book, and I would like to see it again and other works by the artist.

Thanks.

:hi:

I posted this question in the favorite artist thread but I thought I'd get a better shot at an answer this way.

Thanks.

EDIT: damned R key!!!!!!!!!!!!

3. No one knows?
I'm sure this painting has been discussed in every basic art history course.

If I could remember anything else about it, I'm sure I'd have an easier time searching for it.

6. No.
I mean I saw it in a book, but I don't think the painting was based on a book.

I wish I could tell you the period or the country.

It's basically a realistic painting, aside from the personification of the cat.

Perhaps it's surrealist.

I just don't know that much about painting, except that I've never been able to get this one out of my mind since I saw it years ago.

I think there may be some implication in the painting that the girl in bed was masterbating. I'm not sure. It was so long ago. But my feeling was that the naughty cat was revealing the young girls sexuality.

8. It wasn't Manet's "Olympia", was it?
It's not quite what you're describing, but it's the closest I can think of.

10. No.
Thanks, tho.

It's a young girl's bedroom. The cat and the curtain are in the foreground. The girl in bed is set back a bit.

I remember the tones being very warm.

I've tried so many ways of searching for it.

Now I have to get to work.

I'll try again at lunch.

9. Are you sure it
wasn't a movie. Seems to me I saw a Red Riding story on IFC with Christina Ricci. I thought that I saw that scene in the movie. Maybe.

12. I saw your post in another thread and looked around.
But now, with your further description, I know which painting you mean. I don't know the artist though, but I'll look in my books. Give me a few minutes.

14. I think I did speak too early ...
I thought I had it in a book, but I was wrong. Still, the subject of the painting (color, yes?) is somewhat I remember seeing. I see if I can find it, tough.

22. Could you be thinking of Balthus
One of his paintings "La Chambre" has a little person, not a cat, pulling back a curtain to reveal a girl on a chaise. There is a cat sitting on a dresser, though.

25. That's it! Different from how I remember, but once I saw it!

So funny. I saw this painting once, almost 20 years ago. I remember it quite differently, which I find interesting. But as soon as I saw it, I knew this was it.

Thank you so much!!

Now I want to check out more of his work.
