They cut out some scenes of Geordi being tortured. Those scenes would help give us anger toward Soran; to make him more of a proper v
El-Aurians. 23rd century Federation seems to know them well. Why were they so close to Earth?
The interior lighting of the Enterprise-D is terrific. Unfortunately, it was done because the sets were old and made for a TV series; lacking in detail. :( Still, I wish later movies kept the lighting style.
It is said early on that Data's emotion chip is fused, but at the end of the story Data says he CHOOSES to keep it in and learn to live with emotions.
The mortality theme is great and is one of the two things this movie will always have in its favor.
As is the Data/emotion subplot. Data reminds me of... me. Except I came around a lot longer before he had; maybe I should sue Paramount. :7
The Enterprise-B showing the ribbon has the ribbon coming from the opposite angle than what's possible! (the Entperise scanners cannot go to the opposite end of an entity coming toward the ship...)
Great model effects, little in the way that's computer graphics crap.
Data says "Deactivating me is the only viable solution". Um, death is the only living solution?!
The directial style by David Carson is great. It's identical to the concepts he used for the TV series; and the pan'n'scan release of the movie reflects this. (I watched the widescreen version, but I've seen the P&S version too)
As is the music.
The DVD version has altered sound effects; to conform to DS9's. Yuck.
The dogfight where the Klingons blow up the bridge; all in all a great scene, but a slo-mo of a yellow-shirt going over Worf's console (from the original viewing) is replaced with a different angle, without the slow-mo effect. This new clip cuts back to the slo-mo of Troi bouncing back!
The crash scene is truncated, some shots of the Enterprise gliding through the stratosphere are cut.
Making the Klingons old-school aggressive again is fun.
A few continuity points; the means to infiltrate the Enterprise (Geordi's visor) is novel, but the ship has modulating shield frequencies ever since season 3... Also, Scotty's dialogue in "Relics" (tv episode, season 6) infers Kirk is ALIVE. In Generations, Scotty witnesses Kirk's death and is sad!! And how come everyone can determine where and when Klingon ships decloak?! (And the teleportation of Picard to the surface is the wrong visual effect; it's not the Klingon transporter effect...)
On the DVD extras disc, Kirk's original death has an exponentially more dramatic approach - even if it meant Kirk gets no long speech at the end.
In the 23rd century, one could feel it when Kirk looked at the screen before saying "I'll go", as if he felt 34 again.
The humor in this movie works with the plot; it doesn't feel forced. Later movies don't get the concept and the comedy is jarring...
Soran's madness is quite interesting to watch; particularly is his discussion with Picard on the Enterprise.
And I need a boyfriend.
