She's been in movies since she was like 15, maybe even younger.

I know she did "Man on the Moon" when she was 15.

30. It was 100% due to good direction.
That was her first film and the director knew exactly how to get good performances from children. Look at his other work.

Reese is a spoiled rich kid who has always gotten what she's wanted in life. She's fake to the core, and not a nice person at all. The academy was probably afraid she would sue them if she didn't win.

If you only knew how she got that role. I don't want to get sued, so I should probably keep it to myself.

48. Could you have pulled off the role as June Carter
the way she did?

Could you have sung the songs the way she did?

Acknowledging her performance and giving her an award for that performance is not putting her on a pedestal.

Most of us are simply image, the image we portray to the world.

She gets paid because folks like her image and what she, as an actress, brings to the role.

I don't have a problem with that.

Now if you want to discuss pedestals and images and sports, you have my ear.

...what other ways there are, besides the casting couch (which exists for men as much as women, by the way), for people to slide into roles beyond the legitimate audition process.

I was making no judgement on the validity of the poster's accusations toward Witherspoon. I have no insight in that regard.

And I thought the poster was referring to her role in "Man In the Moon." Is that the role about which you said "actresses with much more clout and connections auditioned for the part?"

In Nashville. NOT in Bel-Air.

I have connections in the movie business, even though my involvement is in the outer fringes, and Reese Witherspoon's fam,ily would mean NOTHINg to any Hollywood types, unless it was their niece or something. So, her major connections aren't there. In music, very possibly.

I've never heard her called a "random Southern girl" -0- every interview I've ever seen or read of her mentions she went to a private school. Who cares?

77. I think she was close already......
....I seemed to recall reading she's going to get the biggest paycheck for an actress in a movie she's doing next year, topping what Julia Roberts got for the awful "Mona Lisa Smile".

She's a consistant big box office draw, even when doing some of the harmless forgettable fare she's gotten since "Legally Blonde". Sadly, she's gotten away from doing the risky roles she was taking in the late 90's and now pretty much runs in the Hollywood mainstream.

I am not a big country fan but that music gave me chills sometimes. My father used to play that music over and over and I grew up with it. I wasn't aware that June Carter wrote "Ring of Fire" which was also covered by one of my favorite punk bands whose lead singer (((worships))) Johnny Cash, Social Distortion (with lead singer Mike Ness).

62. A great year indeed -- she just edged them out
It also helps when the movie you're in is top notch -- maybe people say that's why Cate Blanchett didn't win for "Elizabeth": she was great, but the movie itself was lacking, and was not critically acclaimed. "Transamerica"'s script got some very mixed reviews, although Huffman was great.

114. Comedy Is Most Difficult Of All And Rarely Recognized As Such
Woody Allen is the only one who has gotten a comedy to get any r-e-s-p-e-c-t, well, Sideways did pretty well last year but it's far and few between -- they want drama, drama, drama! But comedy is much harder to pull off IMO. It's easier to portray some sad scene and get tears than to keep up the pace and have people laugh and then remember the plot.

That said, I love Reese too.

I haven't seen all of Walk The Line yet (just scenes from when someone else was watching it,) but she seemed pretty believable. Her singing wasn't as good as Phoenix's, but she has a solid voice for the part.

As for her being spoiled, she comes across as self-assured instead.

So it's not that weird. And if she was good in this one performance, it doesn't matter that most of her previous work was in teeny-bopper movies, IMO. It's not a lifetime achievement award.

And "Legally Blonde" was an excellent movie -- critical kudos, too.

Reese deserved the award. And, unlike the Golden Globes, but like SAG, she was chosen by her peers.

I can't understand the harshness here -- this is nothing l8ike Helen Hunt winning. It's more like Hilary Swank. And, Witherspoon has a way better resume than Swank did when she won the first time, and NO ONE here is saying anything.

If it's some kind of weird backlash re: subject matter, June and Johnny were wonderful, progressive people. And raised some fine damn kids.

And, if you do loom at many past winners of this award, they had lousy movie roles before and after... and some truly didn't deserve the award.

Just since 1997: Helen Hunt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts, Halle Berry (hey, you said roles before and after -- X-Men? Catwoman? Gosh, she didn't serve THAT Oscar!), Charlize Theron (What? An ex MODEL? The Italian Job? She sucked). Guess only Hilary Swank and Nicole Kidman deserved it since 1997...

76. "Not a lifetime achievement award" But achievement of some kind is req'd
But its also not a never-have-done-anything-decent-previous-to-this award until now, and you're missing something, either there was a good to fine body of work that preceded the Oscar performance or blew you away like Hilary Swank the first time (btw, never heard of "it's her or his turn"?) neither applied here. and the best actor type oscar has almost always been validated by later fine performances and quality of films, don't think it's gonna happen in this case.

Did you notice she was not smiling on her way up to the podium? Probably hearing the stunned to discordant murmurs in the crowd.

a best actress award is the specific performance for which the award is granted. What came before it is completely irrelevant.

Your whole argument seems to stem from your OPINION that her prior work is pertinent to the award, which it is not. The only thing that matters for any of the big awards at the Oscars is the specific instance for which the award is granted. Prior movies are completely irrelevant.

For instance, how large a body of work apart from TV and crappy Burt Reynolds movies did Sally Field have when she won for Norma Rae?

Just like Hillary Swank. I know them both as great actors, they are favorites of mine, but the chirpy bird Reese Witherspoon is no Sally or Hillary. Sissy Spacek fits better as a comparison, but Spacek a southerner, playing a big, big main role of Loretta Lynn had a much bigger challenge and the magnitide of that achievement is bigger by comparison, but that was it for her. I can't see that what was really a supporting role (in Cash) deserved an oscar.

But you're right Sally did crap before but had an emmy before an oscar-but Reese has only played herself in her multitudinous crap.

She nailed a difficult part and made it look easy -- down to the singing. Just because it LOOKS easy doesn't mean it is. And it's corny to nom every role where the main part is portrayed throughout as somehow "emotional" or "afflicted." I didn't like Transamerica at all. My hairdresser is on his/her way to Turkey to get switched M 2 F she could have played the hell out of that role, Felicity had no spark at all IMO.

104. For everyone saying Reese Witherspoon is rich, connected, whatever
From imdb:

"Laura Jean Reese Witherspoon was born on March 22, 1976 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She was the second child born to Dr. John and Betty Witherspoon. Her father was a military surgeon specializing in the ear, nose and throat. Her mother was a Registered Nurse who would later become a Ph.D in pediatric nursing. Reese spent the first four years of her life in Wiesbaden, Germany where her father served as a lieutenant colonel in the US Army reserves. Shortly after, John moved the family back to the States, settling in Nashville, Tennessee.

Reese was introduced to the entertainment industry at a very early age. At age 7, she began modeling. This led to appearances on several local television commercials. At age 11, she placed first in a Ten-State Talent Fair."

Again, not rich. Maybe upper middle class, definitely solidly middle class. No Hollywood-style connections. But, what the heck difference does it make? So, she didn't grow up poor, she doesn't deserve teh Oscar.

Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 05:36 AM by girl gone mad
Of course she "does the scene". She didn't get to be the highest paid actress of all time by being an outsider.

She used to openly admit that she wasn't a likable person back in her 'Election' days. Then the studio realized she played much better as a wholesome red state girl. I'll give her credit for being smart enough to play along.

But don't take my word for it. Here is what Kevin Smith has to say about her:

Waaaaay back when we were casting on Mallrats, Mosier and I are really anxious to meet Greasy Reese Witherspoon (who I then referred to without the "Greasy" moniker), because we're both huge fans of the coming-of-age drama Man in the Moon. Back then, our casting agent, Don Phillips, would meet with the actors and actresses before we'd audition them, precluding the meet-and-greets I presently am engaged in all week. For the Greasy meet-and-greet with Don, Mosier and I arrange a drop-in, as we're eager to see what she's like, this young actress who so dazzled us as Sam Waterson's daughter. So Don is meeting with her in his office at Universal, and Scooter and I pop in like we don't know she's there, and start jawing with her. What a disappointment.

First, she comes off faux-erudite as all hell, and condescending to boot (personality traits that make for the kiss of death in my book). Secondly, she compares her Stephen Dorff-starring flick S.F.W. to Clerks, calling them "...the same movie, essentially." If you're me, and you've seen S.F.W., this is tantamount to saying Clerks licks balls. By meeting's end, we tell Don there's no reason to bring her back for an audition, as we're now non-Reese fans.

Now whether this registers at all with Ms. Witherspoon, I have no idea. But on two future occasions, I have run-ins with Reese which are not at all pleasant, and may reflect what one can define as a grudge being held against me for not letting her audition for Mallrats (a slight that she should've sent me roses for, all things considered).

The first such run-in takes place at one of Details magazine's "Young Hollywood' Parties. I'm dragged to the shindig, kicking and screaming (I hate parties, and I hate 'em even more when they're wall-to-wall with creepy young actors in L.A.), by my then-girlfriend, Joey Lauren Adams. We see Reese there, holding court, and Joey wants to extend her a congratulations on her performance in Overnight Delivery.

To understand the mammoth gesture this is, you have to know Joey's history with this flick. Many months prior, she and Reese were up for the lead in the picture, the script for which I did an uncredited re-write. It was being directed by the same guy who'd also crafted that contender for the cinematic throne of Citizen Kane, Bio-Dome.

While Overnight Delivery would eventually be unceremoniously dumped straight-to-video by New Line a year later, it was something of a hot project then, and Joey was up for the female lead (indeed, at one point, Joey was going to not do Chasing Amy -- the film that earned her a Golden Globe nomination -- and instead do Overnight Delivery; and people say there is no God...). Ultimately, Reese was cast instead, as New Line was grooming her for stardom. After the initial understandable bout of disappointment, Joey found peace with this decision, especially once she'd gotten Amy under her belt.

So it's a year later. We've shot Amy but it hasn't come out yet. Joey and I have seen an early cut of Overnight Delivery, and she wants to say something nice about Reese's performance to Reese -- a real stand-up gesture that you'd never catch me making, were I in her shoes. We jockey up to Reese (me, quite unwillingly), and Joey tells her that she's seen the flick, and she thinks Reese was really good, adding she's glad Reese got the part when all was said and done. And how does Reese react?

She sneers at Joey. Then turns away.

Children, I wouldn't say it unless I'd witnessed it with my own two eyes. Greasy Reese Witherspoon sneered at the compliment like the third grade girl with the most Valentines sneers at the third grade girl with the second most Valentines after all the Valentines have been given out, just prior to the distribution of the holiday cupcakes. It was an ugly, ugly moment. There was no offer of even an insincere, Hollywood-type "Thanks." Merely a sneer.

Big deal.

From reading what he wrote, he thinks highly of himself. I guess he is offended that she doesn't think as highly of him as he does.

Plenty of stand offish folks are great professionals. She won an Oscar, she didn't win the Oscar because of her image, her personality off screen or whatever debutante ball she attended. She won it because of her talents that allowed her to put in one hell of performance.

You don't have to like her, but down playing her win because you don't just makes you seem a tad jealous and rather silly, imho.

" They should call her Reese Wither-your-boner."
Just sayin'...

124. Reese does have that off-putting icy quality, like Nicole Kidman
Two ice queens of the current cinema. It took me a long time to warm up to Kidman, and I am still not quite there for Witherspoon. She is a good actress, I just don't find her appealing as a personality, which has nothing to do with her acting ability.

And a week or two apart. Aside from dark wigs and accent, to me her characters seemed the same. Maybe it's growing up seeing June Carter and Johnny Cash, but I ever saw June in her June.
